29 Palms Inn

About

Historic Inn, located at the 9,000 year-old Oasis of Mara in the Mojave Desert, California. Adobe Bungalows & Wood Frame Cabins, Restaurant & Organic Garden. Est. 1928

Story

Established in 1928 at the historic Oasis of Mara in Twentynine Palms, the 29 Palms Inn has welcomed guests to the beautiful Mojave Desert for almost a century.

This 9,000-year-old natural desert oasis was first settled by the Serrano Indians, who named it Mara to mean “the place of little springs and much grass”. Guests can explore the grounds, and learn more about the cultural and historical significance of the Oasis during walking tours, offered on Saturday & Sunday mornings, led by the Inn’s own desert naturalist, Pat Flanagan.

Across the 70-acre property, looking out to the mountains of Joshua Tree National Park, the 29 Palms Inn offers an eclectic mix of guest accommodations. Family owned and operated for five generations now, the Inn offers a kind of retreat that’s hard to compare with other places. You’ll stay not in one of a hundred cookie-cutter rooms, but one of a few wood frame cabins built in the 1920’s, or adobe bungalows from the 1930’s. For those looking to stay a little longer, full amenity guest houses and vacation rentals are also available. While no two guest quarters are alike, they all promise comfort, relaxation, and stunning desert views.

The vibrant poolside restaurant at the Inn is open daily for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch, with a fresh menu that specializes in seafood, steaks, daily pasta specials, and great vegetarian options. Sourdough bread is baked daily on premise, all soups, dressings, and desserts are house made, and everything grown in the organic garden called Faultline Farm is used in the kitchen. There’s a full bar that includes a great wine list, local beer on tap, and fantastic seasonal handcrafted cocktails. Look forward to live music every night of the week, and rotating art exhibits showcasing local high desert artists.

Minutes from Joshua Tree National Park, and an hour from the Mojave National Preserve, the 29 Palms Inn is your getaway into the California Desert. It is also your gateway into the thriving art scene of the high desert. Located at the west end of the property is the 29 Palms Creative Center & Gallery, the vibrant working studio of artist and family member Gretchen Grunt. Drop in for pottery painting, sign up in advance for a workshop or class, and plan a little creative time for your next vacation.

Great dining experience. Having been a waitress back in my working/college days and well trained at providing great customer service I take notice of eating establishments to do the same. It was a very busy night at the 29 Palms Inn and we were a table of ten (all wanting separate checks). That alone takes a lot of time for the waitress to handle amongst their other duties. But our waitress Julie handle it all with poise. Our table was well taken care of and never in need of anything longer than necessary. All the other staff on the floor helped one another too as they were all hustling and bustling. And if not, there was one standing close by looking over the dining area to be sure patrons were not needing attention from the staff. Oh yeah, and the food was marvelous. The appetizers and food came out nice and hot and without error. The little side salad was perfect. And that sourdough bread!! There was a big selection of adult drinks and wine to order too. All in all you can't go wrong with the 29 Palms Inn.

Hidden desert gem of a hideaway! My mom and I visited here Mother’s Day weekend, and we had the most amazing experience. Their restaurant has exceptional food and excellent service. The grounds, including their full, farm to table garden, is unique and well kept. The cottages are quirky and fun, and it’s a treat to be out under the stars in a courtyard little home. We found all the amenities comfortable and deeply enjoyed the coyotes, stars, refreshing pool, and grounds. Stay here!

I just ate at the restaurant, didn’t stay at the inn. I had a delicious steak salad cooked just right and my dad said the fish was very good as well. They’re salad is picked fresh from their garden. The atmosphere is very charming.

I had the pleasure of staying at this amazing oasis for a few days this week!! I highly recommend the Mesquite House 'cabin', which is a very beautiful and well-appointed 2BR-2BA house that was recently remodeled, with lots of room to entertain inside and out in the enclosed private backyard. Great views of the hills from the backyard, and an easy walk to the restaurant, which serves surprisingly good food and beverages, with a lot of their fresh produce home-grown in their farm adjacent to the oasis. Everyone I encountered were super friendly and service was always great. The restaurant does get really busy! So come early or be prepared for what seems like a short wait (I usually like to dine early). The area is quiet and nicely secluded but very easy access to Joshua Tree National Park, and all the amenities 29 Palms has to offer (numerous restaurants, shops art galleries etc). I wish I stayed longer. I definitely will next time!!

We grabbed lunch here one day and it was DELICIOUS! I still daydream about the butternut squash hummus appetizer they have. The Spicy Chicken Sandwich was also very good. Very clean restaurant and friendly wait staff. Overall just a great experience.
