Story

Not content with the men being the only ones to protest the British monarch, Penelope Barker organized for fifty one women to meet at the house of Elizabeth King and sign their names to a document pledging to boycott British goods. Unlike the men who participated in the Boston tea party disguised as Native Americans, the women of the Edenton Tea Party signed their real names to the document and mailed it to England, proud to stand up and defend their country in one of the first political acts by women in the new nation. The defiant act of those fifty one women meeting in that house to protest unjust rule inspires us today. We pay homage to their bravery and boldness with the naming of The 51 House in their honor.

“We are signing our names to a document, not hiding ourselves behind costumes like the men in Boston did at their tea party. The British will know who we are.”
—Penelope Barker

51 House is a great setting and atmosphere. We ate outside on the porch, overlooking the Albemarle Sound. My wife enjoyed her drink, the Protest. And these were the reasons that I gave it 2 stars and leaned toward 3 stars. But the waitress was unable to describe the Carolina clam chowder, which was not as described. It was very salty so I'm unsure of the flavor, but it did have lots of clams. The broiled fish and scallops were very very ordinary. The only flavor was a little paprika, which you really could not call that flavorful. The bacon and Brussels sprouts were mushy. Finally, we waited a long time just to get our check. We finally had to go to the front to pay. This was definite not worth the $75 we ended up paying.

The best place in the area. Very tastefully done. Food, serice, staff, and live entertainment. Beautiful location right on the water. The Sunday brunch was devine.

We have been several times to 51 house. In the beginning the food was wonderful. However as of late it has been disappointing. If you get Dianne as a waitress you will be well cared for however I haven't had her the past few times we were there. Our first bad experience was a dinner. We waited quite a while and food was mediocre at best. As others have said no taste. Most recently we went for their Sunday brunch buffet. The buffet was very odd and nothing seemed to go together. Items included: soup, potato salad, biscuits and gravy, French toast and sausage, sweet potato hash and fried chicken wings, ham steak with pineapple, baked cod and a prime rib carving station. There were also desserts one resembling a canned fruit cup in a martini glass. You could also get omelettes to order. My father ordered one and it never came. When we inquired the waitress said the kitchen was backed up. Then took his order again. It finally came after we were all finished. I assume she never put the order in. We did not complain because we had a wedding to get to and just needed to eat. Drinks are not included in the buffet so my family of 3 spent over 70.00. Definitely not worth that. I don't think we will be back. I would leave a review on Facebook however that feature seems to be removed which is sad. You can only improve by hearing what people have to say not sticking your head in the sand.

First time visit last night, TERRIBLE! The drink menu is creative but not a reality. Cute names and descriptions but they all taste like water! Most drinks are 1/3 filled? I tried 4 different drinks on this menu before switching to bottle beer. Moving onto the apps and main entrees.. it gets no better. The Brie was not warm and was completely tasteless. The chicken Caesar salad had absolutely no flavor, dressing and chicken. The bourbon chicken on sweet potatoes was cold and completely dry! The cheese ravioli was served room temperature, flavorless! We tried to provide feedback to the manager, Cherry Ann, she was not receptive and had no intention of repairing this dining disaster. Unbelievable lack of concern even though several tables had the exact same complaints that night...I will not return to this restaurant again, it is all overpriced serving tasteless drinks and food with a careless manager!
