Story

Since founding Spa at the Century 16 years ago, Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia and husband Sergio Cocchia have grown the company from a single location into the award winning Absolute Spa Group, Canada’s largest and most luxurious spa chain, with 9 locations to date. Absolute spa specializes in massage, facials, manicures, pedicures, academy award spray tans, body wraps, water therapies, and much much more! Having received over 70 awards for spa excellence, including Business of the Year. Lisogar-Cocchia’s successful corporation has attracted many celebrity clients including Elle MacPherson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael Buble and Zac Effron.

I had a gift certificate so I tried getting an RMT session here in February and I got Aisha, who turned out to be great! I have just booked my third session with her. The spa is clean, a little small, and definitely not cheap. But it is pretty standard when it comes to hotel spa pricing.

I came here for a massage, I'd have a professional massage every few weeks but had never had one in Vancouver before. It was a very disappointing experience. 
I felt cold: the masseuse had cold hands, the massage oil was not warmed and the room had a draught. She also used a weak pressure, I asked her to increase but she did so only briefly, and her long fingernails scratched me throughout. The massage did not focus on the areas I requested. At times it felt like I was being tickled, it was so weak.
I looked forward to a hot shower afterwards, because I was cold and covered in oil, but I couldn't see how to adjust temperature; it was only lukewarm. There was a large pool of cold water on the washroom floor. While the robes provided are very plush, the flip flops were way too small for an average man's feet. Reception staff were ambivalent and didn't seem to value my business, and a massage here costs considerably more than other nearby businesses. The downtown location was the only good part. 
Do not go here, avoid this place!!!!

Very disappointed in the shellac manicure from this spa. Let me preface this by saying I have been going to Absolute spa for years and have never been disappointed. This time I went in for a mani and pedi before a trip to Maui. Seeing as this was going to be a very "special" trip I didn't mind spending the extra money on what should have been an extraordinary mani/pedi (and when I say extra money, it cost around $170 for a shellac mani and regular pedi after tax and tip). Instead I was given a manicure that was literally the worst manicure I've had in my entire life. It even began peeling off 2 days later. This meant I ended up having to go get another manicure in Maui when I should have been laying on a beach. I would strongly suggest going to any other nail salon around here (there are lots!!), who will charge 1/3 the price and you will get a substantially better quality mani. The pedicure was fine and did last for a few weeks.

So, I waited a week before deciding to write my experience at Absolute "Spa" at the Hotel Vancouver Fairmont location last Sunday.  So, it says it's "Canada's first men's concept spa" (Kinda like the concept of flying cars ... never going to happen). The website shows wonderful, professional stock photos and I quote "The décor at this location incorporates stainless steel, leather, and wood materials! Enjoy our new 3000 sq foot expansion that now incorporates co-ed relaxation lounge and complimentary spa cuisine".  The furniture looks more worn than my used, 1980's university days.  If what I saw was the new 3000sq foot expansion ... wow, that contractor must have made off like a bandit!!!

The concept here is simple ... long hallway ... individual showers/steam rooms with toilets, followed by the change rooms on the left, a few massage rooms on the right, and at the end of the hall, the large (and very warm&stuffy) waiting area with really beat up old furniture and a card table which has complimentary spa cuisine (a canister of flavoured warm water due to the heat in that back room, and what appears to be an 80's rice cooker that dispenses hot water).

The reason 2 stars? Because of Mary (my RMT).  She was very good. She checked in every so often to very if the pressure was good enough, worked on the tight areas more and the not so tight areas less.  Good job!! 

A $300 disappointment for myself and my wife that day ... I implore the owners and managers to visit a REAL Spa and see how a such an establishment should operate.
