The tilman park location needs improvement immediately . Every weekend when I'm off from work an want to take my dog you the nearest field to play fetch, I have to physically pick the trash off of his ball because the park is just plain filthy . There are banana peels and chip bags and paper plates that have been in the same spot for weeks and nobody cleans it up. And they wonder why there are so many raccoons and rodents hanging around . I'll be addressing this issue until it's fixed , because this is sad for such an upscale neighborhood to have such a trashy park . I mean if not for the people that walk their dogs , how bout for the kids sake ?

I love ARPD! My three sons all attended preschool through ARPD and each had a great experience. They have all attended various camps throughout the years and had a great time. The summer baseball league is lots of fun and very low-key. And the Parks and Playground program is a wonderful, free, drop-in program at various parks where parents can drop off their kids. Kids then get to run around and play while being loosely supervised by park leaders, who also lead fun optional activities. I am super grateful for ARPD and all of its free and low-cost activities.

My 9 year old son participated in the Trailblazers camp in August 2014 that has one day Monday and a two-day Tuesday Wednesday overnight in the Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland Hills. He returned from this camp severely sunburned (the worst of his life) as no sunscreen was applied after swimming on Tuesday or Wednesday morning. My son is a fair skinned redhead. He had sunscreen with him but he reported that they were never reminded to apply it and on Wednesday morning were directed to hurriedly pack up their sleeping items. He also reported that no one brushed their teeth. Most galling he reported that on Tuesday at lunch (which they packed from home) they were told to eat only half their lunch as the other half would be their dinner Tuesday night. The food provided for Tuesday dinner was only a Smore which was made with two very small marshmallows. Breakfast Wed am was generous - hamburgers, potato chips, sugary cereals. Lunch Wed was hot dogs. He reported that the counselors ate a lot of take out pizzas which were never shared with the campers. He also reported much confusion about how many campers were sleeping in each tent. There were large tents provided by ARPD which were for 10 campers but they had 14 campers in the tent and were very crowded. He said it was run by young people and their boss was an older guy named "Bob". Sounds very disorganized and underfunded. I think if you have kids for 3 meals you should buy some decent food for them and prepare it. So for $160 what do we get? Basic supervision. one swim at Roberts Pool. Sleeping overnight in a crowded tent. Two tiny marshmallows to warm on a propane stove (no real campfire). A long hike - but it took really long as they got lost! A bus ride to swim again at Don Castro but they were late for this as they were waiting for food. Bus ride to/from the local Alameda Park. Archery. I also occasionally have left my child at a supervised park program. Usually that seems okay. Once though I arrived at 5 pm, and supervision had ended 25 minutes early while workers put things away sending kids to playground alone. Then the workers left before 5. I saw them leaving as I walked from my car. The kids were told to wait in the playground until their parents arrived. The program was to end at 5 pm. Total fail.

I miss the ARPD old days in the 70's when (the late) Bea Rowney was in charge there. Thanks to the Reaganomics budget ax that came in the 80's a lot of programs were cut. Like the week long hiking trips to the Sierra Mtn's, usually organized and led by Bob Connolly. The Jimmy Carter gravy days were bomb! Todays kids are missing out. Yeah - Reganomics and uptick in liability lawsuits ruined it for everybody and did it in. Sad.
