Alum Rock Park

Story

Alum Rock Park, founded in 1872, was the first municipal park in the U.S. state of California. Located in a valley in the Diablo Range foothills on the east side of San Jose, the 720 acre (2.9 km2) park offers 13 miles (21 km) of trails, varying from fairly level along Penitencia Creek to sharp switchbacks climbing to the ridges to the South Rim Trail and the North Rim Trail. The narrow floor of the valley includes a visitor center, a small museum/animal rehab facility, picnic areas, playgrounds, lawns, sand volleyball pits, mineral springs, lush plant life, woodlands, creek play opportunities, and occasional group camping. The ridge trails offer views of Santa Clara Valley and of the valley in which the park is located. Some trails in the park are a part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail; the Todd Quick trail connects with the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority's 1,600-acre Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve.Equestrians and mountain bikers have access to some of the park's trails, while others are reserved for hikers only. Cross-country teams from high schools around North San Jose, such as James Lick High School and Independence High, use the park for training and for meets.

This a very good hike. If you like hiking, I recommend to park your car in the first parking lot, and from that point you can begin your journey to the upper picnic area. There is a nice creek among the trail.

Quail Hollow picnic site: 2 areas with 3 tables each. BBQ pits in each as well. Though 1 has 1 pit and the other 2 pits. Bathroom in this area is closed so you have to use the the parking lot one. First come first serve.

I grew up going to this park, 50 yrs. It's best during the week when there are less people. This place has so much history. Do yourself a favor and read all the information signs placed throughout the park.

Went there yesterday July 11 2017 had to leave wildfire broke out. The trails were nice to walk and the sound of the creek was very relaxing. The smoke and soot on the way out was scary. Great place.

I've always loved this park to adventure at ! Was disappointed because I booked a party here and had to cancel due to mountain lions lol, but what else is there to expect in their natural habitat ! Me and my husband love taking hikes here and exploring is a must !
