Had a bad experience the first time - went to dine in an hour before closing time. Asked for a table but was made to sit at the bar. Placed my order. No one offered water or anything else. My food came all packed for a take away. I informed them I was visiting Rochester and my hotel room didn't have any cutlery or the right space to dine and so I was planning on eating at the restaurant but was asked to leave since they had already packed it. When I requested for a spoon n a fork, they reluctantly gave me some. They weren't able to print me a receipt and wanted me to provide phone / email if I wanted an electronic copy. Thankfully the food was good and they were close to my hotel so I decided to give them another chance. 2 days later time I walk in around 6 pm and the place was empty. There's no one there in the restaurant area, someone finally comes from the back / kitchen after I loudly said hello a few times, meanwhile another couple arrives and waits behind me wondering what's going on. Again I was asked to sit at the bar which I politely declined. I was barely halfway through my meal before the server dropped a bill on my table. I wanted a dessert but at this point I was just done with them. The food is good, but the service is really bad and needs a lot of improvement.
This restaurant is THE gem of Indian cuisine in Rochester. My wife and I have been dining here frequently for the past year and there is just no competition for this place. It was recommended to us by several respected members of the Indian community and it has surpassed our expectations every time. The service is attentive and caring. If you have any question or issue with any menu item, just ask for Ramnish. He will ensure you have an wonderful experience. We've ordered half the items on the menu and the quality and consistency of the food never disappoint. The samosas and momo are delicious and perfectly executed. Their baby lamb chops are the best we've ever had. The chicken Daab is exquisite and the salmon tandoori is so good it should probably be ilegal! The curried goat was lovely and pretty much anything you get from their tandoori section of the menu is divine. Someone said there was an issue with the billing on the POS, but when I asked Ramnish, he said he was aware and showed me the new POS system they just started using precisely to remedy this complaint. Best Indian cuisine in Rochester. Wonderful service and attention to detail from a family owned and operated gem.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, chicken curry. I ordered from this restaurant 25 years ago and the curry flavor was really good but felt the chicken was dry. Not this time, chicken was delicious and the curry sauce was just the way I like it. I got medium hot. I ordered take away for my husband that’s how good it was. The service was very professional. This will be my go to
Delicious food as well as appetizers. The decor is definitely something to write home about. Friendly atmosphere and good service. The food was hot and well presented. Friendly and courteous staff. Will definitely go back.Food: 5/5
Food is a matter of individual taste, and personally I found the food poor. My friends and I ordered 4 veggie curries and 1 lamb, Rohgan Josh, which was the worst I've ever had. 3 of the four veg curries were bland. The service was the pits, one server on Christmas Day. We waited 50 min. for our drink order. I will not be returning.Food: 2/5
I visited Amaya Indian Cuisine 12/27 at approximately 12:30 PM. I ordered takeout, and specifically ordered chicken biryani, butter chicken, and chicken tikka masala. I was traveling with my wife and four children from the northeast to the midwest. I did not intend to dine in as I had an 8 hour drive ahead and wanted to grab something quick and continue my trip, although it would’ve been more convenient to dine in. I complimented the restaurant attendant on his restaurants appearance, and he thanked me and added that “we do not allow dining in for lunchtime, we only do dining in for dinner.” He stated this after seeing my wife and four children enter to use the restroom. After my family finished in the restroom, I watched as he helped 2 couples to their table who were dining in for lunch. This clearly showed how prejudice he was against families. Just be aware that at this establishment, if you have a family/children, be ready to be refused service and fair treatment. I assure you that I did not even want to dine in, it was just the fact that he lied to me and was caught in a lie which showed how he treats families. In addition, I asked for plastic ware and he gave me very dirty plastic spoons, I had to stop by a local store to buy plastic spoons to eat. The food was subpar. There was minimal amount of chicken in the butter chicken and tikka masala, it was majority sauce. Not spicy, not flavorful. The chicken biryani;was ok, but also lacked flavor you’d expect from an Indian restaurant. It was a very poor experience, please look elsewhere for Indian food. This establishment proved that they do not care for families, they do not value hygiene, serve mediocre food, and to top it all off, their toilet in the women’s bathroom was clogged. Terrible experience. It’s also very expensive for what you get, I spent $70 for the chicken biryani, chicken tikka masala, and the butter chicken with 2 naan bread.
Food was reasonable. We had dosas, which were provided with mote filling than i sm used to good but were less airy than i am used to bad. What was most annoying was that when we were finished eating, the staff started vacuuming the floors, essentially preventing further conversation. I've been the last customer in other restaurants but this was rude. Especially as it wasn't their official closing time yet. Wheelchair accessibility: Ground level.
December 2022: I have started meal tiffin services from them. They make healthy and affordable meals. The nutrition content is good. Old: I was there for Saturday's South Indian thali special. The taste is fantastic and the variety too. The price is ~$15. The hostess is excellent and warm-hearted. Please go and try the Saturday breakfast special.
Went for dinner on Christmas Day and the food was great. Staff was very friendly. You could tell they had been very busy all day long and they handled it very well! I will definitely be going back!Recommended dishesChicken Makhani, Butter Chicken
Worst experience ever : Unprofessional and rude : My friend and I have been Amaya's customer for the past 10 years. Had spend over thousands of dollars here. And not even once we had a bad experience. But something changed this year. Did Amaya's owner change? Or they are cutting cost due to inflation? First of all, there is no more on the house pappadums. First, RED FLAG. BUT the biggest issue is, their signature dum biryani has changed. The dum biryani we had for hundreds of times at Amaya's before, comes in a clay pot and covered with a naan bread. But now, that is all gone. No more clay pot and no more naan. Second RED FLAG. A BIG RED FLAG. Then, it gets worst. They got mixed up with our spice level. One was supposed to be spiciest and another is no spicy. So obviously we can't it eat. So, that is a third RED FLAG. 3 RED FLAGS at once. We never had this issue ever. It ruined our night and my friend just left. I tried to be polite; so I waited for them to come back, to tell them what was wrong and we are leaving. But, the owner was rude. Saying we are wasting their money, etc. They need to know that we have come here for the past 10 years so we are expecting to be served with the same quality of food as it has been. But for 3 RED FLAGS back to back in one night, something is definitely WRONG with this restaurant. They should have professionally listened to our feedback, so that can improve and fix their RED FLAGS and also, respect our decision to leave after a worst experience. I guess Amaya's is over for us. I wish things were the same as before. But as they always say, great things never last, it comes and goes. To the original Amaya, you will be missed.
