About

The American School for the Deaf is a comprehensive learning community that welcomes all deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.

Story

Founded in 1817, the American School for the Deaf was the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States and a nationally renowned leader in providing comprehensive educational, programs and services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

The American School for the Deaf is dedicated to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in the development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life, utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language/English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed lifelong learners.

We develop the whole child- intellectually, emotionally, physically, socially. Here, students and their families are surrounded by supportive peers, guided by dedicated educators and specialists, and empowered by the latest technology.

Utilizing the proved American Sign Language/English Bilingual Approach, we foster a language-rich environment that maximizes each student's unique potential

I do not recommend this school for your Deaf child. Graduation rate is significantly lower compared to other schools. Teachers are not entirely fluent in ASL and uses the Total Communication approach. Education for these Deaf students is NOW, not later. With the slow changes ASD are trying to make to become a Bi-Bi language school rather than Total Communication is hurting their students to full high level educational access when parents can get the top quality interpreters in mainstream provided parents are also fluent in ASL themselves.
