American University of Health Sciences

About

American University of Health Sciences (AUHS) was established in 1994 as a minority serving, post-secondary, Christian-based institution, that educates all students for success.

Story

The American University of Health Sciences, formerly American Institute of Health Sciences, was originally founded in 1994 as a postsecondary training institution to educate and equip students for life careers in the field of health education and to produce quality healthcare professionals for the community and the country.

The University reaches out to serve the graduate and undergraduate educational needs of constituencies in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and other counties in California. It firmly believes in the principle of giving students the means and the opportunity by which to grow and develop in a profession of great import, at the same time empowering them to meet the demands of the larger healthcare industry and community.

The University aims to produce healthcare professionals who are competent and committed when employed in the service of the medical and pharmaceutical community. To this end, the University upholds the following as its guiding principles and philosophy:
The University adopts a holistic approach to education and promotes total development of mind, body and spirit. The University exists to promote the intellectual, analytical and critical abilities of its students, complemented with solid values such as service and commitment to life-long learning. Intellectual and character value formation is key to individual success and growth;
All students must acquire the fundamental knowledge and understanding of science and medicine, and appreciate how this discipline has changed and is continually changing human life. The knowledge that students gain should not be limited to theories but to actual medical and clinical applications, thus the University puts a premium on the program's practical and externship requirements;

The University thrives in an intimate and quality learning environment, where there is enough space for creative individual expression as well as fruitful social interaction. The University houses exhaustive library and computer resources. It harnesses a dynamic, enriching environment where students can freely interact with accomplished and dedicated faculty;

The University recognizes its critical role in community development and social health service. It is aware that institutional success lies behind what students give back to society and how students make a difference beyond the four walls of the classroom. The University impresses upon all graduates the higher mission and noble privilege of community service and improving the quality of healthcare;

The University commits to continually develop and upgrade curriculum and courseware to enable students and practitioners to stay up-to-date and conversant with prevailing practices and technologies affecting the healthcare industry. It proudly exhausts all means to reach out and respond to the needs of the healthcare industry and community;

The University upholds the core values of belief in God, and through Him oneself, one's learning, one's commitment and service to others and the community of man, and does its best to instill these values in both faculty and students.

Mission

American University of Health Sciences, a private Christian-based, minority-serving university of higher education, welcomes students of diverse backgrounds and prepares them to make a positive impact on society through the provision of exceptional quality patient-centered care within the context of a global perspective of the human condition. This mission is accomplished through the creation of a strong and caring academic environment where excellence, diversity, and the development of the entire person—mind, body and spirit—is addressed and where teaching/learning, research, service and scholarship is valued and supported. Inspired by a strong belief in God and the Christian values of love and caring for humankind, and of justice and respect, the University’s core values include a holistic approach to education, promotion of the intellectual, analytical and critical thinking abilities of its students, evidence-based knowledge, and service to our fellow man, and a commitment to life-long learning.

100% WASC accredited! When I visited the campus in June, I asked about the accreditation and was told "very close". I just checked and sure enough, it happened in early July. Thus, I wanted to post my review of my June visit. I did not have an appointment. But I asked for a tour, and soon I was seeing classrooms, visiting with a few students (more like "hi"), and had quick opportunity to visit with a few faculty / administrators. Let me close by saying I work in higher ed, so I do like visiting other campuses. AUHS is a professional school that concentrates on credentialing students to work in high-demand fields. The folks I met were dedicated to the students,, extremely accommodating to me, and overall very impressive.

This school is very unorganized and does not prepare students for success. I saw that in 2011 they were supposed to get WASC accredited, however, in 2015 they still are not. The school is just a business and is only worried about students paying them money. They are not focused on the quality of education only the quantity, so whether or not the material that the professor is teaching accurate is not their concern; but if you do not go to the resources the "offer" then it is the students fault that they are not prepared. There is a really high turn over on staff and the head of the general education department abruptly left.I really do hope that they get accredited so that students will be able to transfer and get quality education especially since this is a nursing school. I am very disappointed in the lack of concern about the seriousness of becoming a Nurse. As far as future students I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone as of now, maybe that will change

I applied in 2012 and loved the school. I got accepted and was helped by the staff including Dina. The school has values that they follow as well as rules that they need to follow according to the BRN. I dont discredit the school based on a few people who didnt get what they think they are entitled to. The school has tutoring, mentorship, summer camps, friendly staff and they dont treat you like a number. The first meeting is not with financial aid, it is with an advisor who tells you what classes transfer and what your options are. If they were so concerned with just money then they wouldnt tell students to take some classes at a community college to save them money. They email and call to guide and answer questions the students have. All doors are always open and everyone does what they can for the students. The school is concerned about the student and their well being as well as build competent nurses to work in this world. The school gives you all the tools you need and more but if a student doesnt utilize it then it is their fault not the schools. If you want a school that cares then AUHS is great.

I am undergrad student from Los Angeles, seeking a Bachelor's degree in nursing. As I was searching and visiting nursing schools and programs I came across American University of Health Sciences, what caught my eye was that one could earn their BSN in minimum of two years! I researched the school and decided to inquire more information. A counselor at the university right away helped and answered all the questions I had and gave me a tour of the school. Right away I knew I wanted to attend this school because it had everything I looked for; one-on-one attention from the professors, small size classrooms, professionals with high degrees in the field, and a good passing percentage of those who take the NCLEX! Now, as a student AUHS has been helping me become a good student and above all it is preparing me to become a great nurse!

AUHS is relatively a new nursing school. From what I experienced so far, the school was somewhat unorganized. However, as the weeks went by, it got better. Every school have good and bad sides and I would say that AUHS has a lot of good sides. AUHS is a small private school. You will be with your group throughout the program. They will be your family for the next 3 years (age difference doesn't matter). The advantage there is that you and your group can help each other to survive each quarter! The feeling of being the new student won't matter to you once you start. The professors are great. They really want you to learn and pass the class so they encourage students to communicate with them. Classes may be overwhelming since it's an accelerated nursing program, but the professors are there for you and there are tutoring as well. You can do anything as long as you are dedicated to your studies. AUHS is a private Christian school, but students here are mix. The school does not discriminate other race and religion so that's a good thing. AUHS is a private school so it's expensive. Tuition ranges between 80,000 to 94,000. Students apply for the sub/unsub government loans and parents apply for the PLUS loan. If the government loans don't cover your expenses, you can always apply for a private loan. Education is a great investment so by the time you graduate as a BSN, you will be earning a lot more once you start working.
