I absolutely enjoyed The American Writers Museum. It was so interactive & enjoyable. I spent about 3 hours going through the museum. I read for an hour in their "reading" room; they didn't mind! Definitely returning on my next trip to Chicago!

It's a small Museum, but very well put together. The exhibits are extensive, and very professionally done. Then actually draw you in. They encompass many different genres of writing. A lot of people showcased that I would have never even thought of.

Super cool exhibit. Brought in authors to the exhibit that I did not realize it even think of as authors. Very well put together. Very quiet. Had a neat interactive exhibit that you can contribute to as a museum guest. Things start off arranged in chronological order by timer period, and give examples of authors from different genres, including women and minorities. Even brought out some things I didn't consider real writing. Sometime when I have more time I want to go back and slow down, read more of it

My lover and I attended a reading and lecture (for "A Few Red Drops," a YA nonfiction book about the race riots in 1919 Chicago.) I am always a bit saddened that he and I are consistently around 30 years younger than most other attendees. Neither of us are all that young, either. So I wonder of, by the time each of us reaches retirement age, there will be any more lectures for us to attend, as the generations keeping them afloat will have died. That bit of melencholy aside, we loved the museum, though we wish it had more artifacts. But there are many lovely and informative multimedia exhibits (one poem about school is accompanied by a "smell-o-vision" of pencil shavings!) and we learnt a lot, wandering through the halls before and after the lecture. There is also a wonderful children's reading room (where the snacks and drinks were set out before the lecture - they were delightful, by the way) and my lover and I took much pleasure in flipping through the picture books, and recalling those we had in our respective youths. I would like very much to attend further lectures here and to explore the walls even more - I got much inspiration for books to read, which I think the people who run the museum would be happy to know!

A unique museum with hands on opportunities for the guests. A wonderful time line of writers through the centuries that have completely influenced culture and given us an imagination and reason to think. A Chicago's writers area is to be expected with nods to Studs Terkle, Nelson Algren and Mike Royko. Good to see Illinois' first poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks totally represented.
