Story

Applewood Bakery has been the neighbourhood destination for scratch baked bread and treats since the early '70s. Originally a Scottish Bakery, and then Portuguese, our business has transitioned through time and become a hotspot for baked goods from different parts of the world. Our customer's favourite treats are tea biscuits, sweet bread, stuffed croissants, portuguese custard tarts, handmade butter tarts, challah (egg) bread, biscotti, and samosas to name a few.

Their white bread is the only thing "baked fresh daily" (something that their business cards claim all their products are). People who frequent the store will notice the same pastries and breads, in the same place, sometimes for a week or two. However, if you ask the owner if it's fresh, she will eagerly assure you that it is. Make sure you ask for the specific date that something was made if you want to guarantee your money’s worth. Their breads are their only saving grace, but even those must be bought with caution. Always ask for the date. The other in-house products are not as notable. The $8 pies are not worth the expense. The fillings, particularly the cherry, blueberry and lemon, taste like artificial candy. The owner claims that they are full of fruit, but this is hard to believe as you swallow a mouthful of sticky, gelatinous filling. Apple is really the only acceptable filling, but it has its own problems. The apples have almost no flavour to them and are not tender as a real apple pie should be, and the crust is obviously frozen (don’t believe me? just ask the owner yourself). There is no cinnamon or other spices to provide more flavour. Anyone who wants to bring one of these pies to a function should not, as the poor attempt at a lattice-top will disappoint. On the open door (which is its own problem. The owner seems to think that keeping the door open to allow warm breezes through is good enough. It is disappointing to walk into a store expecting the cool air of an AC to wash over you but have to deal with the same heat from outside, except worse because of the close confines. An open door in the summer means insects from outside have been able to make their way inside. Large houseflies and small fruit flies are common in the store.) is a sign with a screenshot of Insauga's Top 5 Butter Tarts in Mississauga article, where this bakery is incorrectly given the number one spot. It irks me that they have received acclaim for butter tarts coming from Baxter Bakery, that, after delivered, are frozen in Applewood's freezer. That's right, the owner takes credit for a product that isn't even hers, she is but a distributor. People who go there for the butter tarts should take the time to visit the other end of the plaza where Longos is, as they not only carry the exact same butter tarts, but their tarts are (each) 50c cheaper than Applewood’s. The final thing I am unhappy about was that, when I asked for some samosas and the owner realized there were no more in the front, she yelled at the girl in the back to bring more. The girl was quite far back so I did not expect her to hear, but the owner took it upon herself to yell at the girl a few more times until she finally heard her. In the time it took to get the assistant(?)’s attention, the owner could have gone to the back and got the samosas herself. I am just very disappointed with the ethics and management of this place. You definitely do not see quality and freshness like the owner claims. If you ever think about buying from here, remember to ask for the date that the product was made.

Fresh and friendly local bakery. Amazing (fair trade) coffee, some vegan and gluten free options. Great selection of breads, (no preservatives) and pastries.
