About

Arbutus Coffee Shop

Story

The Arbutus Grocery has existed, here at the corner of 6th and Arbutus Street, in one form or another since 1907. From its beginnings as a sundries store to it’s evolution as a neighborhood coffeehouse, little has changed with the look of the building. Listed as a Class A Heritage Building by the Vancouver Heritage Register, the location has long been locally renown and treasured.

In 2002, the coffee shop opened in its existing incarnation intent on being a comfortable, easygoing addition to the neighborhood – a casual place with great coffee, great baking and most importantly, a devoted staff to tie it all together. Beginning in December of 2007, in an effort to increase our profile as a coffee emporium, the operating name of the company became Arbutus Coffee and with that came a few small changes.

While our products continue to be made in-house, our endeavors in knowing our customers (and their husbands, wives, kids and dogs!) and consistently serving up top notch coffee as well as homemade treats has allowed us to grow steadily from a one-woman operation to a team of friendly and committed students, artists, travelers and overall hard-working individuals.

Our goal is to maintain these high standards and continue along this path of growth while keeping to our small-time roots. Whether it’s two customers or two hundred customers, we strive to be warm, welcoming and worth the while for each of them.

This quaint coffee shop is located just off the Arbutus Greenway bike path. Incredible staff in a welcoming environment. Lots of pups lounging outside and they have access to a water bowl. Great quality goods and daily drip coffee offers. Shout out to the awesome guy working today for his amazing customer service.

I've tried scones, 2 specialty drinks, and drip coffee: The sweet scones are decent. The savoury scones are too salty. The mocha was fine - not great, but acceptable. The matcha latte was, frankly, the worst matcha latte I've had - it was somehow watery, chunky, and gritty simultaneously. The drip coffee is reasonable. The staff - well, I've had super polite and I've had insanely rude. The ambiance is fantastic - it's very small but well-appointed and well-maintained. I've given this place 3 tries and I think that's more than plenty. If you're going, stick to drip coffee.

Lovely coffee/tea spot. The place has an awesome vibe, folks that come by are always friendly and usually dog lovers. I like to occasionally come by, sip some tasty Java on the patio with my k-9 buddy Jazz, who always ends up making new friends. 👍☕🐶

Nice, laid back coffee shop that manages to stay casual and unassuming, something few others in the neighbourhood have even realized they're missing. Decent espresso, and a really good summer cold brew, infused with cardamom and served with vanilla cream. They also have sizeable scones and muffins baked in-house, a nice change from constant pastries.

Tried sandwiches twice there and both times were disappointed. They're very stingy with the filling. The first one I had was turkey and Brie and I couldn't even taste the turkey because they only put one thin prepackaged style slice in the whole sandwich. I thought I'd give it another chance and ordered bocconcini sandwich with tomatoes and basil. For a almost $9 sandwich, I would expect a little more content. Never again!
