I used to work here while I attended High School at Arcata High before 2010. I was being paid through a school program but this was the only job that they could find me. My boss was an older woman who took too many breaks in her lounge chair in the back room and simply was often rude to many that came in to check out books or movies, including myself. My job was to put books away and clean, and often enough there were points where I had nothing to do. One day a woman came up to me and asked if I could help her find a particular children's book, surprisingly one that I had just put away. I happily gave the book to her and she thanked me and went to go check out her book where my boss was at the computer. The woman must have mentioned how helpful I was to my boss, because not long after the woman left the building, my boss came over to me and started yelling at me in front of everyone else that was there. Right in the children's section. She brought me to tears as she told me that I was not supposed to help anyone, that I was never even supposed to even have that job, and also said that she wished she could fire me. I was heart broken. Ive always done my best, I love to help others, and my boss just scolded me for helping a woman find a book. I hope she doesnt work there anymore. I know it has been years, but if she is still working there, I want others to be aware of what happened when I was there. Nobody should be treated like how she treated me.

Some librarians give that title a bad name. If rules aren't posted, you can't rewrite them out if the air. Some hag needs to breathe and reassess a real situation. Your job are on the line, I'm sure.

I observed the librarian call the police on a man for using an electrical outlet. He was working, not belligerent, very polite and not doing anything wrong that I could see. Her reason was the man was physically too large (try saying that to a woman!) and he might deter others from using the area, then changing her mind she said he was monopolizing the outlet. The officers arrived and were awesome, didn’t require the man to leave, in fact, they didn’t really want to say anything to him, but asked nicely if he would share his outlet, or something to that effect. Now two in number, the librarians were getting mad and on a little power trip, saying “ you have to do anything I say even if it isn’t a library rule or a law.” Do yourself a favor, drive a little further and stay clear of this so-called community service paid for by your taxes or you might find yourself up against the wall. Scary place.

It was a nice library but they only let me use one power outlet.

Very constricted area where the librarians are extremely heavy-handed in their reactions to the large populations that come here. There is less space than they can provide for the size of the public. Too many people, too small a library makes for a stressful and combative environment.
