Popular spot known for espresso martinis in the Marina. Came here for dinner on a Friday evening around 9pm and it was pretty crowded. We didn’t have reservations for our party of four but we nabbed an inside table with a less than 5 minute wait. Outdoor seating with heat lamps is also available. The Mac and cheese was the crowd favorite. I did enjoy the poke nachos as well, though note that there is a lot of mayo-based sauce on top. The buttermilk calamari came in a huge portion size so that’s a good option for those groups that are hungry. We got a salad and risotto to round out the meal - those were alright. Service was pretty slow but it was a busy Friday night, so we just went up to the bar to try to pay the bill.
Balboa café is a local favorite for me. I’ve been coming to this place for over 10 years most recently I come and get lunch is here and meet colleagues for lunch and drinks. there buffalo chicken wrap is amazing. Happy hour is always a good time. It tends to get packed and super lively with a lot of locals. There espresso martinis are highly recommended. If you’re coming for dinner, plan ahead and make reservations because they do tend to fill up most nights.
Meeting the owner, he made me feel welcome despite having never been there before, and me having a seat for 1. The food was great, the drinks were strong and great tasting. I’ll be back every single time I’m in San Francisco.
My husband’s cousin recommended this spot because of their espresso martini. Of course, I was sold. We were welcomed by an enthusiastic host who sat us outside in the sun. We were plenty warm but they also had shaded spots with heaters and a full interior. The menu has a list of creative drinks which made my decision a little tough. Our waitress Oxana was helpful in choosing what I want to drink and I landed on a cranberry vanilla cocktail I forgot to take note of the name which was light, refreshing, and not too strong. Next I had my espresso martini. Typically I like the versions with a little cream, but I was pleasantly surprised. It definitely went down too fast so we had to balance it out with some food. We ordered their tuna nachos which were as excellent as everything else. They have thick yellow corn chips, fresh jalapeños that pack more flavor than spice, and plenty of tuna for each bite. Highly recommend! Be sure to ask for Oxana if she’s in. She was so attentive, knew the menu, and was very engaging.
I was told they have great espresso martinis here but I have had better! This was very sweet and did not have the three coffee beans on top either.
Great looking food Hot people. But not that amazing as reviews say. I'm not mad. But not a highlight of the week or day or month. Still enjoying the atmosphere and nice workers
Friends, I had the best time today at the Balboa Cafe! I've been many times before but it's been a while. The ambiance is outstanding! Beautiful bar, great drinks, and a really tasty burger! We grabbed seats at the bar and made friends instantly. Great local place with an extremely friendly staff! Bring out of town guests and enjoy the beautiful dining room, or sit at the bar for the local flare! I'll see you there
Everything we order was pretty good food and drinks. The prime rib plate is well served, the meat is tender and perfectly cooked. We shared the plate for two and we still got a good amount each of us two. The ahi tuna nachos, and chimichurri fries was great and enough for 4 hungry persons to share.
It’s a decent bar. I find the food to suit the palette of someone who only uses salt as a seasoning. Drinks are expensive and the espresso martinis come from a tap meaning they’re premade which is annoying since they charge $18 for each one. That’s not to say I don’t come here a lot. It’s a hot bar to see and be seen and that’s what you’re paying for. Be prepared for long lines if you show up past 9.
The service started off great with a nice host and the buser arrived quickly with water. After that we rarely saw our server and after our food was cleared we were ignored until we asked for service by getting up. The menu has few vegetarian dishes unless you like salads. So I got the taco salad and my husband not a vegetarian got the Cobb salad. They were both ok. For the price, we would have expected more. It was … ok.
