The first thing you'll notice when dealing with the Bank of Alameda is that it's not quite up to date with some things. The online banking looks like what it hasn't been upgraded since 2001, there's very few branches, and the graphics on the debit cards would have looked awesome 20 years ago, and there's none of that magic check reading deposit stuff at the ATM.

What you'll also notice is the best most personal service you've received from ANY kind of business in a long time. Every single staff member at the two branches I've visited have been extremely capable, knowledgeable, friendly, empathetic, and ready to assist with whatever help they can provide.

My old bank, Chase, just put up bulletproof glass in the branch closest to my home, which feels really weird when you're trying to talk to the teller, especially if you don't want every single person in there hearing your business. When you walk in there's always guys with big smiles and suits trying to sell you some kind of new banking package. And one more than one occasion those magic ATM check reading thingies don't even work, and if it's after hours, you're out of luck because you can't deposit the old way anymore.

 In contrast, when you go to the South Shore branch of Bank of Alameda, you're greeted with a smile and a comfy chair to sit in directly across from the desk of a teller.  If you're there for a while, they might even offer you some Peet's coffee, in a real mug no less!

Finally, some interaction with bank manager John made the decision to move to a local banking institution rather than Wall Street villains Chase an easy one. He's incredibly personable and easy going, and has made my life very simple in starting a new business account.

If you're looking for an Alameda Bank, I strongly recommend you consider Bank of Alameda before going with the big guys.
