This is more about Barnes & Noble in general than the store in Ellicott City. The store in Ellicott City deserves five stars because the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the store is clean and the shelves are well-stocked. In general B&N deserves one star though for an incredibly stupid policy. Barnes & Noble doesn't price match with itself. If you find a new, unused book on sale online with free shipping don't expect the same price if you walk into the store. You can get the same book for less without leaving your home. And yet people wonder why no one visits their stores? Not only can you buy the book for less on Amazon you can actually buy it cheaper on Barnes & Noble's own site!

I generally love B&N, but the one in Ellicott City has a very rude cashier. On the receipt I got from him it says his name is Ab S, not sure if that was him really or not, but wow. Couldn’t slow down, was really annoyed when I wanted to use my physical card instead of my smartphone, got frustrated when he had to ask me for the last 2 digits of my phone number because he was going so fast and didn’t listen... just overall annoyed and was not friendly. Every time he finished with a customer he would very loudly yell “NEXT!” even if no one was there (there wasn’t anyone after me). Everything was fine until that checkout experience. I get customer service jobs suck, as I too work customer service, but that is no excuse to act like that.

Everyone loves Barnes and Noble. This B&N is a great environment to get studying and work done, in fact it's my go to place for both. Great coffee and snacks as well. The staff is incredibly respectful. You're not going to be asked to leave just because you're using the space to work.

It is a wonderful place to browse for new books or magazines. Friendly customer help desk. Sitting available throughout but never enough. WiFi available. A great Cafe indoors serving cookies and pastries and Starbucks coffee. Reasonably quiet. Ample parking, free. Good lighting. Large children section with a large section of toys and games.

Generally a typical B&N store. The cafe is clean and well-run. The store is generally pretty busy, which is nice in an age when bookstores are being killed off by online competition. The best thing about this store is their community involvement and special events, particularly for kids. They are plugged in with what’s going on in the schools, and work with the library system and the schools to provide programs to encourage kids to love reading.
