About

The Bay View Center is committed to the elimination of the stigma of mental illness through education, advocacy, and community involvement. "Where you are accepted."

Story

The Bay View Center is a drop-in center for anyone eighteen or older, who has or has had a mental illness such as but not limited to: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, and Borderline Personality Disorder.
The philosophy behind consumer run organizations is that by working together and sharing experiences we have had in the community, we are able to help each other. Matters such as medications, neglect, abuse, hospitalization, over medication, housing, human service agencies, Social Security Disability, families and friends and the local mental health agency programs are addresses by individuals who had these first-hand experiences.
Many individuals in the mental health system do not have the supports of family and friends. Most of us only want a chance to put our lives back together and to be productive again. We have shared the pain of our peers and can offer support and real empathy. We can help to find solutions to a variety of obstacles such as: food, clothing, housing, and health. Fear of the mental health professional is alleviated in a consumer run program, because everyone has been through similar experiences.

Mission

The Bay View Center will provide support, activities, and programs to help persons with mental illnesses and dual diagnoses to advance along the recovery continuum toward increased autonomy, self-confidence, and community inclusion. They will receive encouragement and assistance towards self-actualization through opportunities for employment and/or cottage industries. The center will provide a safe and welcoming environment for recreation, socialization, and personal growth.
