The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and travail of past and present day miners. In addition to the Mine, one can tour the period coal camp buildings situated throughout the grounds. Lovingly restored, the Coal Company House, Superintendent’s Home, Pemberton Coal Camp Church, and the Helen Coal Camp School, give visitors a true representation of early 20th century coal camp life. The Exhibition Coal Mine operates on a seasonal schedule, opening on April 1 and closing November 2. Informative and historical experience. Came as a family, spent about 2 hours on the grounds learning about historical coal mining. Ticket prices include a tour, the opportunity to explore the museum, and the opportunity to explore the grounds which included many of the historical houses. Exhibition Hall has nice bathrooms, a gift shop, and a fudge area. The coal cart tour, only took about 35 to 40 minutes, and our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. He had many great stories, and came from a line of coal miners. He was even one himself! We took our school age children with us, and they enjoyed it as well.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was impressed with our tour and guide Mike. His 43 year experience in the mines was very informative. He demonstrated many facts about a miner’s life in the mine. I have a new appreciation of the strength and willpower the men had to work under such horrible conditions and for so little pay. They were definitely a generation with a strong backbone. I’m thankful that mining conditions have improved over the years. The museum was very informative and several buildings were on display, the school, church, miner’s house and the overly generous superintendent’s house. He lived lavishly compared to the true workers of the mine. Definitely worth your time to visit.
Great experience I'd highly recommend. You get a glimpse of the hard life the miners had years ago. Great exhibits and area. Our tour guide Gerald was very knowledgeable and a great asset to the the coal mine. Be sure to bring a jacket or light shirt. It's cool underground year round and sometimes water drips on you from the roof.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30

I stopped with a friend on our way back from a trip in NC on 6/27 and this might’ve topped the entirety of the trip. Truly amazing to learn the history and get to experience it firsthand. And the tickets include so much extra as well. Our tour guide Gerald was amazing and so informative, including some of his own personal history as a miner. I would 100% stop by again if I’m ever passing the area again, and can’t recommend it enough for anyone who is traveling through.
We’ve never been to a museum/exhibition based on coal mining. It was really interesting and well done. There’s a small museum in the main building as well as a home, church etc that you can go through. The really interesting part is going into the mine and seeing what life was like working as a coal miner. You get on a rail ride with a former miner and ride through an area. It doesn’t take long to do the whole thing. It rained for a couple of hours so we did this as we couldn’t do much outside. It’s well worth the experience.
My wife and me visited this place in October 2022. There are plenty hacking trails, museums to spend time until next train. Train ride is informative. This is our first experience in a coal mine. Temperature during late fall is around 55 F inside and comfortable!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$21–30
This was an awesome experience! The staff were extremely nice and helpful. The train ride into the actual mine was an exhilarating experience made more pleasurable by the guide Gerald a 45 year mining veteran. Simply a must stop if you have an hour or so to spend. Definitely worth it.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20
The coal mine tour is a must. You can learn a lot about coal mining in the past, the coal miners, the conditions they worked in, and how the coal mine companies treated them. Our guide Dorsel, was a great tour guide, he explained everything you will see in the mines and will tell stories of his life working in and around coal mines. He explains everything really well and injects some very good humor during the tour. I highly recommend taking this tour if you are visiting the area. Don't forget to check out the upstairs exhibits as well. I wish I could have checked out the buildings around the grounds, but it was raining so I wasn't able to check every part out. Next year when I'm back in the area I will definitely return.
Brought a Boy Scout Troop from the Charlotte, NC area to visit the coal mine while working on their "Mining in Society" Merit Badge. We enjoyed learning so much about the history of coal mining and the knowledge and enthusiasm shared by all volunteers and employees at the facility. Our tour guide in the mine was Don and we just can't say enough good things about how he gets everyone into the tour and understanding the life of a coal miner. His knowledge and life experiences as a 23 veteran of mining really made this experience stand out. We had a personal tour of the cabins and building on site as well as some time with the blacksmith. These were great as well. We will definitely recommend this trip and hope to return soon.
