My name is Esther Lee Stromberg. My Jewish name is Esther Liba and "Ljuba" became my nickname and is what I am called to this day! I was born in Beckley in 1945,the daughter of Harry and Shirley Stromberg, both of blessed memory and the granddaughter of Charlie and Gussie Stromberg who owned the Leader Furniture Company which at the time was located near the Courthouse . Our Jewish identity was reinforced by my parents and grandparents. My grandfather Charlie actually sent away for a siddur that included Hebrew and Rashi script and taught me the Aleph-beis using that siddur. My strongest memories of life in Beckley involved life at Temple Beth El. I remember the rabbi at the time, Rabbi Shindling and his wife who taught religious school. how I loved when she read to us the "Adventures of K'TonTon!" We celebrating Sukkoth by decorating the sukkah set up in the downstairs social hall.During Rosh Hashanah services my father often sang , soloing in the little choir. I remember that my parents had a huge birthday party for my sister Averie Faye and me when we couldn't have been more than 3 and 6 years old respectively. When I was 9 1/2 my family moved to Albany New York. Although I did go back to Beckeley to visit my grandparents yearly they eventually moved to Florida when I was 19 years old and only went back to Beckley once since that time in 1967. During those very formative years in Beckley two things that stand out strongly are life revolving around activities somehow connected to Temple Beth El and Music as my father was a violinist and actually taught Rabbi Shindling's son Sidney to play the violin! And, to this very day Yiddishkeit and music are pivotal faces in my life. I have acted as a Hazzanit for the last 50 years and have performed the music out our people all over the world Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino and Russian Recently my husband and I moved to Zichron Yaakov, Israel realizing a lifelong dream of living in Eretz Israel. As soon as the coronavirus is under control we will go to the states to see the 7 children and their families, 6 of the 7 families live in Berkeley, CA. And then, I would love to come back to Beckley to retrace roots. As I've often joked, my odyssey has been from Beckley to Berkeley! Peace and Blessings to all . Ljuba Davis nee, Esther Lee Stromberg
