Story

Our practice specializes in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, including pain of unknown etiology and pain induced from traumatic events. Many of our patients have been in chronic pain for many years and have not responded to traditional treatment approaches. Our goal at Beyond Physical Therapy is to provide patients with optimal pain relief, return of functional status and reduction or eliminiation of pharmacological pain agents. Patients are discharged when optimal treatment results have been gained and they are able to manage a home exercise program specific for their condition. The exercise program allows patients to maximize the results achieved in therapy.

We strive to reach our goals by performing a comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation including the patient's history, functional status and medication needs. This involves assessment of a patient's gross postural alignment, range of motion, joint mobility, muscular state and myofascial restrictions. The musculoskeletal system is analyzed similar to the manner in which a carpenter would structurally view a house. We address the discovered imbalances and weakness patterns through individualized treatment in an attempt to achieve proper alignment. Treatment is delivered through a combination of manual therapy techniques including myofascial release, tailored therapeutic stretching exercises and patient education regarding neutral spinal alignment and work environment modification.

Myofascial release is highly effective for the treatment of acute trauma from accidents and injuries and is optimal when early intervention is an option. Chronic disorders respond well but may require more treatment. We treat a variety of conditions including, but not limited to fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, migraine and tension headaches, neck and low back pain, TMJ, fascial pain, frozen shoulder, shoulder pain, golfer's and tennis elbow, carpel tunnel syndrome, arthritis, coccydynia, pelvic pain, hip pain, knee pain and patellofemoral dysfunction, foot and ankle dysfunction (i.e. Achilles' tendonitis, plantar fascitis), scoliosis and adhesions/scar tissue with associated dysfunction. Conditions resulting from adhesions and scar tissue such as endomestriosis, frozen shoulder, contractures and post-traumatic scaring (status post mastectomy, surgery, etc.) are often causing pain and loss of function. These often disabling conditions are usually comprised of dense myofascial restrictions and are responding favorably to our treatment.

Many times the tightness in the fascial structurs that surround our muscles is also adversely influencing the function of adjacent organ systems. It has been documented that many patients who have failed to be successful with the treatment approaches for a variety of complex disorders and dysfunction are finding additional secondary gains when using the myofascial release treatment approach for their pain complaints. Other related disorders that have responded successfully to myofascial release treatment include, but are not limited to colic, earaches, lazy eye and torticollis in the pediatric population, sinus problesms, gum disease, esophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain of unknown origin, urinary and bowel incontinence, interstitial cystitis, urinary dysfunction, lymphedema and restless leg syndrome.
