Reviews
Just like the other two reviews said, this otherwise pristine site is almost ruined by the close proximity of the freeway up above. My group stayed in the second group site, called the Lincoln site I believe. Both group sites are very clean, well maintained, and can accommodate large groups with many tents very comfortably. They have a HUGE fire ring, a very nice large BBQ grill, four large picnic tables and two large prep tables at each site. The river access from the Lincoln site was pretty much non-existent. We had to walk past the first group site, Victory site I believe it was called (which has excellent river access) and over to the day use area for swimming and floating. Perhaps the forestry department could look into using a back hoe and creating a beach area somewhere in the Lincoln site?? The bathrooms are nice enough, no water or lights, but always clean and well stocked with toilet paper. I have a feeling Monday must be the pumping day, because by Sunday it was starting to smell a little foul. But back to biggest problem. For me the only real problem. The freeway noise. Our group was fairly loud anyways, lots of little kids running around having fun, peace and quiet was not expected by any of us parents, so during the day it really wasn't that bad. But at night, dear lord at night!! It was unbearably loud. If we come back here, and we probably will as it was a good fit for our kid-centric rowdy group, we will all hopefully remember to bring quality ear plugs for each and every person so that we can sleep at night. I ended up just wandering out of my tent at around 4 am each morning because sleep just wasn't happening. Honestly, without the freeway noise, this place would get a 4.5 from me, a 5 if both sites had river access. Just don't expect to sit in a hammock and read a good book here without earplugs!

We camped at the 'Victory' Group Camp Site... The other site at this location is the Lincoln group camp site. My review specifically relates to Victory, unless otherwise noted. Victory is the first camp site in the the small loop that contains both Group Camp Site locations. The driveway into the camp is somewhat hard to find off of Hampsire Rocks Road, and is directly adjacent to the Ranger Station. Pros: Many trees with large shaded areas, even with the movement of the sun, most of the tent locations are shielded from direct sunlight. There are lots of flat locations for tents and the areas are large enough to group tents together, or spread them out for ample breathing room. The river access at the beach is very nice. There is a sandy beach with a shallow entry point and slow moving current. There are a couple of deeper swimming holes, but it is quite possible to walk entirely across the river at this location. The site is beautiful, clean, the camp fire ring is large and well maintained, but all of this is overshadowed by two issues. Cons: The most obvious is the freeway... Maybe 50 yards away... and it runs all - night - long. The map doesn't show the road leading into the camp ground, which lead me to believe it was just a near by marker. Had I known, I would never have reserved this site. It was so loud, we were woken several times a night due to passing big rigs. It isn't white noise, it's a gale force blast of noise at all hours. The second con are the toilets... At first glance, they appear to be kept clean and tidy. The Ranger visits them daily, but there is a problem. The ammonia smell that comes from them is so strong, it's difficult to breathe. We tried to remain diligent about keeping the toilet closed and the door open, but invariably somebody would leave a toilet open, and then it was nearly impossible to go in until it had been aired out. To be clear, it wasn't a foul smell... it was ammonia burning your eyes and nose. Summary: It pains me to write this review, because it really is a very nice site with those two exceptions. The other group camp is no better as far as sound... That location has more sun and the beach access isn't as nice. If you are deaf or can tolerate the loud noise of the road, you'll love this spot. Just be diligent about keeping the toilet lids closed when not in use and the restroom doors open.

This campground is beautiful: the access to the Yuba River is mellow with wonderful slow-moving swimming holes. There are great tent pads, ample tables, clean facilities, and the scenery is gorgeous. The trouble is that it is directly below Interstate 80, meaning there is never a silent moment, day or night, even down at the river. This is not just minor traffic noise; it's the sort that requires a person to yell to those standing nearby if anything is to be heard with large semis driving by every ten seconds (we counted). We all agreed that the site was great but that sleeping 200 feet from a major freeway made for a very stressful experience--not the quiet mountain escape we had hoped it would be.
