My girlfriend and I took the San Andreas Fault tour, with a brief detour to sneak in to the Joshua Tree park. Our tour guide, Ally, was very knowledgeable about the geology of the area (she actually had a degree in geology), as well as the local towns (the restraint she recommended was fantastic). The Jeep was clean and comfortable. The offroading was exciting, but never once felt dangerous. We got out and explored a bit on foot around the more interesting rock formations, and even had a pet bee named Bob for a brief time. The Salton Sea wasn't quite as luxurious as it was back in it's prime, but it was still interesting, and the fish jerky smelled fine, although we didn't actually try it. I would highly recommend this tour, and especially this tour guide, to anyone that wants to explore the desert.
