While visiting Jacksonville, we decided to go to Bistro Aix for a birthday celebration. The menu looked very good and it had high ratings based on a fairly large number of reviews. Parking was not a problem. We were having a late lunch and there was parking on the street near the restaurant. As we had hoped, the late time for lunch l:45 meant the restaurant was not very crowded. The restaurant was still open and we were quickly greeted and sat in a comfortable booth. The dinner menu is more extensive than the luncheon menu. That is not unusual but, as luck would have it, not everything on the luncheon menu was available either. The crab cakes ordered as an appetizer were small but there were three of them and they were very good. The sweet potato soup was the soup of the day. Two of us ordered that and it was outstanding—smooth, creamy and with a delightful flavor. The short ribs were on the menu and sounded excellent and the server recommended the dish. Unfortunately, that dish was not available. I opted for the steak frites. It was accompanied by haricot vert green beans and french fries. The steak was cooked medium rare, as ordered, and was tender and flavorful. The beans were still crunchy, not boiled to ruin the natural flavor and texture and the fries were a little too salty but tasted very good and cooked perfectly. My two dining companions ordered the snapper fish special which was accompanied by asparagus and brussel sprouts. The first order of fish was very salty and the person who ordered it does not care for food that is heavily salted. Our server, Marina, was very accomodating and ordered another snapper dish as a replacement. It was not salted and cooked perfectly. The other diner was not as sensitive to salty food and enjoyed the snapper and the side dishes very much. For dessert I selected a berry almondine with vanilla ice cream that was to be served warm. As it turned out, that dish was no longer available as it had sold out. I opted for the tuxedo chocolate cake which was outstanding and had a beautiful presentation. See the accompanying photo. It was delicious and, as the name implies, had a strong chocolate flavor with whipped cream and strawberries on the side. All three of us enjoyed the cake and it was quickly consumed. Moreover, as I had noted on the reservation that this was a birthday celebration, there was no charge for the birthday cake dessert. There is an extensive wine list by the bottle. As is usually the case, the "by the glass" list of options is considerably more restricted. There is still a good variety of wine available by the glass. I deferred a bottle as driving through Jacksonville traffic can be a challenge and settled for one excellent glass of cabernet to accompany the steak frites. Our server was very good and made sure everything was taken care of. Marina was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and her attention to detail made the occasion more enjoyable. Bistro Aix was an enjoyable experience and worth a visit. I would prefer the more elaborate menu for the evening meal but the items we selected were delicious. The biggest disappointment, which was quickly remedied, was the heavily salted fish entree which is somewhat unusual for a high end restaurant. All of the selections were well prepared, flavorful, and contributed to a happy birthday family celebration.
The restaurant has dropped significantly. Aix was a staple of my childhood. I remember the pastry kitchen and fresh oven pizzas. The escargot was fantastic; however, the Niçoise salad came without any Nicoise olives! When we requested the Nicoise olives the server returned with pitted Kalamata olives and insisted that the Niçoise salad only “features hard boiled eggs and green beans after the Niçoise state in France.” The dishonesty went ahead and dropped an additional star. Overall: lackluster.
Overall great experience.. Brussel sprouts needed bit more cooking otherwise good food. Wouldn't make anything spicy so that was disappointing as well.
This place has a nice environment. We have a big party and they provided a nice table for us. They don’t have a big selection on their menu, and happy hour ends at 7pm. Their appetizers taste ok, not so impressive. HOWEVER their entrees are delicious. I tasted the short ribs lamb and scallops. Scallops and risotto are the best! Dessert tasted nice as well and I ordered the lemon tart. Service is friendly. Will be back!
As good as always. Only in town for a few days but had to stop by my one of my all time favorite Jax restaurants. The quality of meat on my burger was as high a quality as the steaks I've been eating in Chicago. So glad to see Bistro Aix alive qnd thriving in this Covid world.
We were not disappointed, food was good, small menu which is usually a good sign. Downside is the "French" influence which is really limited and artificial.
I was very astonished, by the service from the waiter’s to the GM . Everyone was on point. First of all the place was packed. I came into the restaurant by myself and was able to observe the efficiency in which the waiters even the GM to the owner were in fast speed mode and yet being attentive to the customers making sure everyone and everything was running as smooth as possible.. The atmosphere was great and the music in the next room could only be heard when the door was opened. I’m glad to say I would continue sending my friends and family to a place with fine dining and great customer service!
It was an amazing experience, reminded me of a true French restaurant. Every dish is cooked to order so if you are used with Applebee's 15 min service where the food is just warmed up, this is not for you. Expect 1h dinner, so enjoy the wine and your date's company. The staff is amazing, thank you James
This is exactly what I enjoy in a dining experience. The setting was intimate. The waitress was warm in her manner and thoughtful in her replies. She told me a little about the chef and even in just the two or three sentences she shared, she was able to convey a sense of how much care and love had been put into the restaurant, it's interior, the food, the entire concept. I found it endearing, which made my meal that much better. I had the Steak Frites Au Poivre, which was delectable. French cuisine without being fussy.
Waited for 1.5 hours for most of the food for a party of 10, 2 people didn't get their food until everyone else had finished. Ran out of bread so couldn't even make due with that while waiting. Waiters were great trying to accommodate more reservations than the kitchen could handle. OWNER took on way more than staffing could handle. Who runs out of bread? Scallops were out too. Food that did arrive was good, but we were ready to walk out and get pizza. Not happy with our experience.
