Women's & Men's Designer Clothing, Shoes & Accessories | Family Owned & Operated Since 1938 | Complimentary Valet Parking & Custom Tailoring
In 1938, the Gushner brothers (Alexander, Albert, and Ben) founded Boyds, a men’s clothing store on Market Street in Philadelphia. Boyds quickly earned a reputation as “the” place to shop, building a family tradition of quality and customer service that remains to this day.
In 1968, after 30 successful years, the business was passed on to the next generation (Gerald, Mark, and Harvey), who would further expand the business, ushering Boyds into the new millennium.
The 70s saw the advent of what became the iconic advertising campaign: “Come Back to Philadelphia, Come to Boyds,” along with national recognition by being voted “Best Single Unit Men’s Store in the US” by Menswear Magazine.
The 80s saw a shift to an expanded line of luxury product, and the 90s began with a move to Boyds’ current location on Chestnut Street, in what was the architecturally beautiful Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts building. And, after 55 years of selling only men’s fashion, Boyds introduced a women’s clothing department in 1993.
In 2004 the business was passed on to a third generation (Kent Gushner, Jeff Glass, and Ralph Yaffe) and, in 2008, they further expanded the women’s business to include shoes, handbags, and contemporary clothing. That same year, Boyds was awarded MR Magazine’s “Store of the Year” award.
In 2014 a fourth generation (Alex Gushner) was brought in to the business, ensuring Boyds will continue to evolve to meet the product and service needs of its customers for generations to come.
