About

A community bakery in Washington, D.C.

Story

Bread Furst is Mark Furstenberg’s latest bakery. It is a project many years in the making, and a result of his relentless pursuit to make the kind of remarkable bread that we often remember and rarely find.

He hopes to have created a true neighborhood bakery that will come to be owned by the current employees and passed on to future ones. Bread Furst will be a place where Washingtonians can pick up a beautiful loaf of bread, delight in a sweet, sip on a hot cup of coffee, and sit and chat with friends and neighbors.

Amazing breakfast place. On the weekends they sell something called the "messy egg" which is like a bacon egg and cheese on an English muffin. However the egg is scrambled and there is a lot. It is a great delicious deal. The coffee is incredible as well. There's not a lot of room for sitting though and can get pretty busy.

Are you looking for a crusty, hearty loaf of whole wheat bread? This place has it, plus tasty pastries and decent sandwiches. Why 3 stars then? It’s just really expensive. $8 for a loaf. $3-5 for a pastry. Maybe the high prices are paying for decent wages for staff? That would be worthwhile I think. But it’s 2 to 4 times more expensive than other bread options, making it hard to make it my weekly bakery.

Bread Furst is an excellent local bakery, with a bright, airy interior. They have bread, sandwiches, coffee, pastries, as well as some other lunch items. You can stop in to pick up bread or pastries to go, or have a casual lunch with friends. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well. The only knock is the price - many of the breads are $7+ for a loaf.

Breads!!! Good donuts!!! Mmm expensive and small (10oz is considered large) coffee. I went here on Thursday morning and by 11am it got quieter in the shop. I think there’s enough sitting. It is right next to a car wash but it doesn’t feel like it (the green wall they put up is a great to make you feel tucked in and cozy!

Pros: Amazing bread, treats, coffee and pastry. Prices are a little high but reflect the high quality. Very convenient but small parking lot in the back for fast pickups. Staff is very nice. Cons: why oh why do places think a large coffee is 12oz? They could use a larger option. Loses a star for charging $1.85 for small a bagel.
