About

HOPE IN THE BAKING! Bridge Bread is a social enterprise that provides supportive employment for people without safe and stable housing.

Story

When people think of homelessness, they typically think of folks with mental illness, disabilities, or addictions. Yet, only 20% of the homeless community falls into those “chronic homelessness” categories. The rest are economically homeless and can benefit greatly from learning a trade and experiencing meaningful work in a supportive environment.

Since 2011, Bridge Bread has proven to be a sustainable social enterprise with a simple business model: we employ people without homes, teach them a valuable trade with transferable skills, and sell the products they make.

Over time, our bakers regain hope as they experience pride in their work. They develop positive, trusting, and cooperative relationships with their staff peers and supervisors. Most are quickly housed.

In other words, hope is in the baking, and Bridge Bread is transforming lives.

Mission

Bridge Bread's mission is to create a work opportunity that teaches marketable skills of commercial bread making to homeless men and women, while simultaneously providing the living wage that is so necessary for financial empowerment, self-sufficiency, and dignity.

Great brownies and cinnamon rolls. People who work here have been given a job to help them get their life back on track. We liked supporting them. People were nice. It's the little brick building in the middle of the photo.

It's a small store that sells bread and pastries. The idea behind it is to hire homeless people or people otherwise in need of help, in order to get them back on their feet. The employees in the actual store are not paid, they volunteer and while I applaud any effort to help needy people I don't think the owner of the company is putting much of a dent in the issue. I still fully support this store however.

Affordable! And very delicious brioche rolls and cherry rolls. Great community resource.

The shop area is uncomfortably small. There were a few men staring at us for the duration of our visit. I understand the program has great merits but I feel the public facing store is a little awkward.

My wife and I are new to the area and accidentally stumbled into this shop. Ironically, we moved to the area to begin an outreach ministry and much of what I have been doing has been reaching out to non-profits. What a blessing Bridge Bread was to come across! The business model is great, the bread is excellent, and it's hard to top the effect this ministry is having on homelessness. Check them out and support them in any way!
