Story

Bulliard Construction Co. Inc. has been working on a single project for almost 25 years now: building one of the best construction companies in the state. As president and founder Tom Bulliard put it: “You don’t get an $8 million job overnight.”

Bulliard’s firm has a long list of major projects finished on time and under budget. And its success is evident in its stable of veteran professionals, the good relationships that it shares with vendors and the Bulliard buildings all over Acadiana – from Lafayette Parish to Iberia.

Bulliard launched the firm in 1984, fresh off of managing construction of a $15 million Holiday Inn. The company built its foundation on a mix of residential and small commercial projects, before it started winning big public jobs about 10 years ago.

In recent years, Bulliard Construction has been the go-to for many local governments, building a string of schools, fire stations and police departments. It also completed two bridges for Lafayette Parish, a renovation of the Lafayette Regional Airport and a massive warehouse for the St. Mary Parish Sugar Cooperative. It has reinforced all of its work with hefty insurance policies and ample bonding from its longtime agent.

These days, Bulliard Construction has eight to 12 major jobs on its books at any given time, including construction of a $9 million elementary school in Iberia Parish. But with 30 full-time employees, the firm relies little on subcontractors. Much of the sitework, foundation and carpentry on Bulliard projects are done in-house and it owns and operates virtually all of the heavy machinery on the job-site.

"It's easy to hire other people and farm out work, but we're hands-on," Tom Bulliard said. "We're there to get the work done."
