Story

Project History
Originally, Lockheed Aircraft Company started business here in 1928. There was also a glass factory (Mission Glass) with whom Lockheed shared a building until Lockheed took over that portion as well. Before WWII, this plant produced most of Lockheed's Orion’s, Vegas, and Hudson’s. An oil and gravel airstrip constructed on the southern end of the property during this pre-war period was in use until 1941 when the P-38 went into production. During WWII, this strip was used as a parking lot and apparently never used again for its original purpose. The plant was closed in 1991, and by 1994, razed and developed into Burbank Empire Center.

Less than eight months after breaking ground, the Burbank Empire Center's first stores opened in October 2001. The outdoor mall's buildings hark back to Lockheed's glory days by resembling manufacturing plants. Each of the outdoor signs features a replica of a Lockheed aircraft, while the mall design brings to mind an airport, complete with a miniature control tower. The theme is carried throughout the center with bollards that resemble rivets, graphics of tools incorporated in the ceramic tile art benches and signs in the food court area. Peter Shire’s “Tiki Towers” are three colorful and whimsical towers exhibiting flight themes and period icons: they are integrated into the hardscape in the food court area. Tile accents in the tile benches and graphics reflect workers in the aerospace industry. His “Empire Plane”, metal cutout planese art tops the pylons signs.

Nice place. Family friendly. The Walmart there is the best I've ever been to. We lost our keys on a night when it was raining cats and dogs. The staff and the security were amazing. If it wasn't for the greeter remembering a small green key cover that I didn't even remember I had we would have never found them. It was a really awful experience and we are grateful the staff was so awesome and patient with us.

I love this place. The are remodeling and I can't wait for the construction to be completed. This updates are long over due but there are still some great stores here! The location is very convenient! I love the layout of the mall. They have stores that they don't have at other malls such as Fashion Nova, Boutique dress stores, sees candies, boutique shoes stores. The plus is that the largest ikea is right around the corner as well. Burbank Town center also has outdoor shopping. This is a one stop shop for all of your shopping needs. Parking is free and convenient! FIVE STARS FOR BURBANK TOWN CENTER!

Everything seemed annoying for this trip. The parking lot is more difficult to access than previously. At Lowe's, I spent roughly 10 minutes just trying to find a shopping cart with all the functioning parts to put my almost 2 year old in. Every one had broken straps, missing seats, bad wheels or some other issue that made it unusable (for an active, climbing 2 year old). At Target, the large carts that hold 2 or more kids were all scattered all over the back of the lot, but none were to be found by the store. Seems like hardly anyone works there any more. There was 1 check out line open and like 20 "self checkouts". They advertise sales, but "only if you download their app." Isn't this the same company that leaked almost all their customer's credit card data not that long ago, yet to save 25 cents on a kids onesie I have to willingly give them my personal info and access to my phone? Feels like all the reasons I USED to prefer going to Empire Center are being phased out. I don't see myself driving the extra couple miles any more to go there. It just doesn't seem worth it.

To packed if you decide to go make sure you go early around 9am or around 8 otherwise you will be stuck in traffic and wait in ridiculous lines. All thou Lowe’s is pretty good all day as well as the new rei store. Happy shopping
