CUPE Local 1196 represents over 1,100 caretaking and maintenance staff employed by the York Region District School Board.

Story

The members of CUPE Local 1196 are responsible for keeping all 213 York Region School Board facilities clean, safe and well-maintained for students and staff. Member positions include caretakers, landscapers, couriers, truck drivers, cabinet makers, electricians, mechanical (heating), general maintenance, welders, locksmiths, plumbers, carpenters, painters and masons.

Local 1196 is a local established under Canada's largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). CUPE represents over 627,000 members across the country who work in health care, emergency services, education, early learning and child care, municipalities, social services, libraries, utilities, transportation, airlines and more. About 55,000 members represented by CUPE are employed as support workers in public, catholic, French and English school boards across the province.
