The campground isn't irrigated. Crazy, since they're next to a lake, so it is super dusty and grimy. That's one thing, the other is the do-nothing rangers that refuse to enforce the rules and laws. There was a loud, drug-fueled rager a few sites from where I was with my family (toddler, little little baby, mom and me, dad) A stoned guy screaming "THIS IS MY REALITY" ran full-speed into our car. Rangers came, and, because why??? said there was no crime, and threw up their hands in utter helplessness as to what to do with drunks breaking stuff. Our car door was smashed in and all we can dobis suck it. True story. Eff those lazy rangers. (We had called SB County sheriff, and they were also useless. ) Lesson: unless you are a large man, capable of violence, you can be effed with. There is no law protecting you in this campground.

The rains brought plenty of water now the lake is a little over 50% capacity. Beautiful to see it with water. Their nature excursions are worth it, they take you around most of the lake and literary give you a different perspective of nature by showcasing many vegetation and wild life. Been coming here for years and now it's worth bringing the family for a beautiful time. By the way that camping site is also very nice, people seem to be very nice all the times I've been here. The bathrooms are clean (no showers) and nights are filled with stars.

I made fishing trip to the lake for the first time in nearly five years. I knew that it was still down from the severe drought but I didn't expect what I found. Needless to say, the fishing trip didn't go well As for other recreation the facilities are still in place. They have some nice cabins, which I have used on several occasions, and another configuration called hurts, but I didn't participate in that aspect on this trip. Late season campers should find available spaces now that school is back in session. Just check the park's website for info.

Amazing, big, calm place in the hills above Santa Barbara. Beautiful lake nearby, unfortenately swimming is not allowed. You do have a little swimming pool. Restrooms are simple, but okay. An absolutely stunning sunset at the west side of the area with the sun going down in the lake ends a day at Cachuma Lake Recreation Area.

we usually go here for the live oak music festival (in mid-spring). It can be pretty warm here during the summer. I have not been here in the off season. The lake has more water (in 2017) than it did during the drought period. The CA-154 highway can be a bit testy for those not used to winding two-lane mountain roads where the traffic is moving faster than it probably should, so if you are not used to that, do it in the daylight. It is not that far from Santa Barbara, but the direct route is a fairly narrow, twisty set of switchbacks to get over the high hills of the coast range. The park itself is quite nice, with the public space among some private properties that border the lake and the river.
