About

Small, family owned restaurant serving Savory and Sweet Crepes, Pannini, European Specials like Stuffed Cabbage, Goulash, Wienerschnitzel, Pasta

Story

Passion for cooking and good food, and love for people prompted Dragica Grabovac to open her first family restaurant. Dragica traces her interest and love for cooking and baking back to her early childhood. While her mother was a wonderful cook, she never cared much for baking. Dragica took over baking duties with her younger sister Mirjana at the early age of twelve, and sometimes baked nearly a dozen different types of cookies for holidays!

When Dragica married her late husband Bosko (successful businessman) in 1980, they entertained many people at their home from all over Europe and the United States. Many who visited commented that Dragica should one day open her own restaurant. Now that her two children, Lucia and Mario (LuMar) are older and more self sufficient, freeing up her time, Dragica seized the opportunity to make her dream a reality by opening Café LuMar. Of course she is confident and hopeful Mario and Lucia will help in the restaurant!

Café LuMar is known for down-to-Earth, home-cooking, and a home-away-from-home atmosphere for all who visit. We use only the freshest ingredients and there is no compromise in quality. The vast selection of salads, sandwiches, crepes, and soups, as well as daily specials with a touch of Croatia, will satisfy even the most discriminating taste buds. Lastly, Café LuMar’s dessert creations, including home-made cookies, are the perfect way to end a satisfying meal.

Café LuMar features trendy and inviting décor with a subtle touch of elegance that is comforting and welcoming at the same time. A dream come true, the Café LuMar is a tribute to family and friends. In Dragica’s own words, the Café LuMar is “a tribute and memorial to my late husband Bosko, who was an inspiration in many ways to many people. The Café LuMar is a fitting legacy to a man who loved good food, good wine, and the company of good friends.”

A family-run business, the Café LuMar is staffed by Dragica, her youngest sister Visnja, her two children and her nephew.

Come on in, enjoy our food, nice atmosphere, and the experience!

Tried this place for lunch today, I work just around the corner so I was hoping it was good. I walked in and immediately felt like I was at home. Nice light atmosphere, and the food was great! The waitress was very comforting, kind of like a Grandma. It was like a home cooked meal. The lunch special was a great deal. I think this will be my new go to spot! Would highly recommend this to a friend, and I'll be bringing my coworkers next time. Although I noticed there was no Monday lunch special.

My family and I came here for the schnitzel but there was none, at least for this day. However, every option was delicious and tasted home made. They were even willing to accommodate my dietary restrictions and I appreciate that greatly. The only thing that I did not appreciate was that things took a lot longer than expected.

First time trying Croatian food, and we weren't disappointed...had a nice selection for two experienced eaters, and some interesting drink options too (house wine paired really well and was affordable) -- service was attentive but not overbearing, friendly and welcoming and definitely feels like the little family restaurant in cute old Monrovia that we were looking for. Will be back!

Update: Since my first visit to Café LuMar, I've gone back several times while visiting my vet in Pasadena. I had to try the chipotle chicken penne pasta as I noticed it being served to another guest on my last visit. Now I'm torn as I thought the Goulash would always be my favorite. It's a coin toss to get me to order my lunch now... On one of my visits I ordered the soup, it's been several weeks now, but I'm pretty sure it was asparagus. What I do remember is that it was the best tasting soup I've ever had. The owner also runs the Mexican Restaurant next door, so on one of my visits, I ordered a shredded beef taco combo plate off of their lunch special menu to 'clean my pallet' after the Goulash. The tacos were great and if I lived close by, I'd be eating lunch at either one of these places every day.
