Story

Founder Michael Mikusch opened the doors to the Austrian Bakery in 2005. It all began with just one breakfast sandwich on the menu and one Austrian baker behind the counter selling his European-style breads.
Through these last years, the bakery and deli grew into a full-service cafe offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, catering and, of course, authentic Austrian pastries, such as Sacher Torte and Bienenstich. Because of the direction the Bakery has taken, there was a recent name change to emphasize it's true offerings.
Today, the Austrian Bakery is known as Cafe Vienna. While you can still find the original breads at the Cafe, your eyes and taste buds, should not stop there.
Cafe Vienna offer Chicagoans authentic Austrian fare, from Wienerschnitzel to the famous Altwiener Apfelstrudel. The Apfelstrudel, made fresh daily by Mikusch, the "Meisterbäcker", caught the attention of the folks at Chicago's Best and was featured on their show in 2012.

Proof that Cafe Vienna has become a favorite dining spot for it's Lincoln Park neighborhood is the line you see coming out the door on the weekends. Through the Cafe's participation in events like Taste of Chicago, May Fest, and many other Chicago-based festivals, word about the food has spread and the Cafe's popularity continues to increase. Cafe Vienna is truly a success story and we're excited to see what the future brings.

We are always open online to take your order. You can pick it up anytime when the store is open.

This is my favorite and by far most visited breakfast restaurant in the city. The breakfast croissant sandwich is a favorite. The food is great, reasonably priced and the atmosphere friendly. Shout out to Susan, she is the best!

Traditional Viennese/Austrian bakery, the Cafe Vienna offers breads, pastries and other confections. Plus it is a good place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The breads stand out, and it is possible to sample then by requesting certain varieties with the luncheon sandwiches. Those sandwiches are good values, too. Try the homemade soups, especially lentil soup. The Apfelstrudel is ad goid as you can get in Vienna. Likewise, the cakes are a taste of Austrian baking.

Service was friendly, however I asked to have my butter croissant heated up & it was ice cold. I came back in and was told they use a microwave to heat the pastries. I chuckled & left unfulfilled. Go to La Fournette in old town or Bennison's Evanston or Alliance.

I came here for brunch, I do like the options they have available. I liked the coffee too, its Intelligentsia. We had the croissant sandwich and the chorizo scrambled eggs and decided to get the light and fluffy waffle at the end- the waffle was amazing. Very light and lots of berries. I wasnt the biggest fan of the chorizo but it would have been perfect for winter. They also have a really good sunflower seed bread- i might go back just for that. the ambience is nice, very like a cafe with dark wood furniture. You can be sure to meet a more international crowd here, I heard a couple of new languages as I was waiting to be served. There was a lot of space available, they do have outside seating as well, so you wont be waiting in line. I might come back to try dessert. Service is rather slow but I had coffee and good company so it didn't really bother me as much
