Story

Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory is a family-owned and operated business located in Urbandale. Mark and John Parrish, brothers who live in West Des Moines, began the funeral home’s latest chapter when they purchased Caldwell Parrish in April 2014 from James and Karolyn Raddatz. The Raddatz family had owned the business since 1987, and in 1995, moved the funeral home from the Drake neighborhood to our current location on Hickman Road, anticipating the western movement of the Des Moines metro population.

Esther and Roy Caldwell started our tradition in 1920 of serving families with personal concern and attention to all details of the planning process. We carry it forward into the 21st century by providing meaningful ceremonies, affordable pricing, and honoring your family traditions and requests.

Mark at Caldwell Parrish helped us getting our baby cremated when we lost our son at 20 weeks. He was incredible to work with and we couldn't be more thankful for the calm and professional presence during a very sad and overwhelming time in our life. We will be forever thankful.

Caldwell Parrish showed my family nothing but kindness and professionalism throughout a very difficult time. We so appreciated working with a family business – Mark came to my parents’ home to talk over plans while my mom was in hospice care. He was very clear about all of our options and the services they could provide, and worked with us on our specific needs. And it was his brother who arrived at the house after my mother died - very late at night - to take care of everything. They worked seamlessly with hospice, which was such a relief for us. They were both very respectful, clearly take their work seriously, and consider compassion and kindness to be top values in the way they approach their business. Additionally, Caldwell Parrish was very helpful when we had difficulty emailing pictures for the newspaper obituary, flexible when we had no idea about how many memorial service programs we would need, and generally supportive with all of the issues we faced – all new and difficult for us, which they understood. While we didn’t end up using it, we did notice that they have a lovely space for memorial services, and were very flexible in how they could set it up depending on families’ needs. They’ll also take care of working with clergy or other memorial leaders, and seem to have a broad network of folks who they can call on to make sure that families’ needs are met. My mother died relatively young and we weren’t ready for it, or ready to figure out how to choose a funeral home or any of the related services. I’m grateful that we found Caldwell Parrish. Those who work in the memorial business end up meeting people at a particularly challenging point in their lives, but it struck me that these brothers and their colleagues have what it takes to get people through it in a graceful, comforting, and respectful manner.

John and Mark took care of all of our needs very professionally and respectfully. Death in a family is an extremely stressful event and Caldwell brothers did a very good job of making sure the funeral wasn't. Thank you for your efforts.

John Parrish is the owner and director of this funeral home and our family was impressed by his finesse and accommodations during a difficult situation. John came to pick my dad up from Taylor Hospice Home and he ensured my dad would be taken care of. On the day of the viewing and cremation, John attended to all our needs. With Vietnamese and Buddhist traditions, John knew what to do and he is known in the Vietnamese community for his familiarity with our diverse ways. The flower arrangements we ordered from John was beautiful and enhanced our experience even more. The staff and the place is clean and professional. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a place that will take care of them during a death and difficult time.

We went to Caldwell Parrish after the sudden passing of our sister and were treated with the utmost of kindness and professionalism. The owners were so warm and welcoming. They treated us as if we were family. They handled every detail for us. They are still eager to help us now, a month after the services for our late sister. We couldn't have asked for better care during a very dark time in our lives. I will and have recommended them to everyone I know. Julie Fetters
