Story

Calverton National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in the Town of Riverhead in Suffolk County on eastern Long Island in New York. The cemetery's street address is in Calverton but the property is in the adjacent hamlet of Wading River. It encompasses and as of the end of 2008 had 212,000 interments. It has the largest area of any national cemetery in the United States, and the busiest (in terms of daily burials) conducting more than 7,000 burials each year as of 2011.HistoryWhen the National Cemetery System constructed Calverton National Cemetery in 1978, the cemetery became the third national cemetery to be located on Long Island. The other national cemeteries situated on Long Island are Cypress Hills National Cemetery, in Brooklyn, New York, which was established in 1862 and Long Island National Cemetery, in Farmingdale, New York, established in 1936.In 1974, Long Island National Cemetery was the only national cemetery on Long Island with available space for burials—but its maximum burial capacity was soon to be exhausted. As a result, plans were developed by the National Cemetery System to construct a new regional cemetery to serve the greater New York area, home then to nearly three million veterans and their dependents. On December 7, 1977, a tract of land was transferred from the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, Calverton to the Veterans Administration for use as a national cemetery.

I have never felt a more peaceful and warm cemetery. They truly honor the men and women who serve. You would think the place is cold being a cemetery. No its welcoming. I bring a blanket and spend hours with my dad. I look around and feel at peace. The place is gorgeous. And there is life everywhere you look. Right up to the wildlife that live amount our family members. I like to think they are the guardians of our love ones.

Calverton shall always hold a special place in my heart. As a Boy Scout of Troop 362 on Long Island, NY, I was one of many who took it upon themselves to decorate the site with hundreds of American flags each and every Memorial Day. It's quite an experience; seeing thousands of gravestones laid out before you, you can't help but feel... something inside of you. It is pride, anger, gratitude, sadness? This I can not say, but whatever it may be, it moves you to think about your place in this world. Standing before so many who gave all they could in defense of our country, it is nothing if not humbling. The grounds are well-kept, and every time I have walked through I have been treated with nothing but respect and given ample time to mourn for our distinguished servicemen; relatives and non alike. Directly outside Calverton stands the Grumman Memorial Park, where a Grumman F-14 Tomcat stands in watch over those who've perished, perched upon it's steel mantle. Calverton is truly a sight to behold, and I recommend it as a humbling place to visit, for any who wish to play their respects to our bravest.

Aside from the authorities not allowing me the proper time to grief. In order lay my father plot down with honor stating "In Loving Memory ETC...". They took it upon themselves and laid it down with no regards to the fact that he has kids/wife and we would have like to state it on his plot. Unfortunately, this was our first time lost of someone this dear, and for my mother/myself this was our best-friend besides the obvious roles he plays. So you can imagine how devastated we were among-st the fact that this was a surprise to us and right before the new year. We couldn't afford the change it cost to make the proper change and the lady seem to be very cold while speaking to her. Aside from that experience, I will give them 4 stars simple due to the clean environment. The honor of the up-kept grounds and the resting bodies go down in a historic way. The honor given from the soldiers is beautiful. I simple would have given it 5-stars if that wasn't my hang up on the plot. I mention it so, you will not make the same mistake that I did..... I miss my DAD/Best-Friend so very much but he is in the best place to rest for eternity. GOD BLESS AMERICA! One day, I will be able to afford to change the plot soon. Thank you. Daniela Couvertier
