About

Carmel Catholic is a private college preparatory high school committed to meeting the academic, physical, social and spiritual needs of its students.

Story

Carmel Catholic is jointly sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) and the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm.). In 1960, the Archdiocese of Chicago invited these two religious communities to build a co-institutional Catholic high school in Lake County. In September 1962, Carmel High School for Boys opened its doors to a freshmen class of 175 students. In September 1963, Carmel High School for Girls admitted students. In August 1988, the two schools merged and a separate corporation was established for the newly co-educational school. In order to heighten awareness of our Catholic roots, Carmel High School was renamed Carmel Catholic High School in 2005. Today, our school operates at near capacity with more than 1,330 students.

Carmel Catholic occupies a fifty-acre campus with 73 academic classrooms and premier athletic facilities. For the 2013-2014 school year, a new $6.2 million Fine and Performing Arts Center and an Information Commons opened to students, allowing for the addition of state-of-the-art choir and band facilities, a multi-purpose dance studio, black box theater, visual arts studios, photography lab, small group study rooms, digital labs and an audio/media production studio. During the 2012-2013 school year, Carmel Catholic launched its 1:1 student computing program, making Carmel Catholic the leading digital high school in Lake County and among the first in the Chicago area. The Carlos J. Serna Learning Resource Center was established in 2009 to serve students who are admitted to Carmel Catholic with learning exceptionalities and have an active Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Accommodation Plan.

Mission

Carmel Catholic High School empowers students to be reflective thinkers, grateful stewards, and responsible leaders as an expression of faith.

My daughter just finished her first semester at Carmel. Background: We are not Catholic, my son attends Vernon Hills High School, so we had the option of a top high schools in the state for free. All I can say is WOW. Not only are they academically focused, but they really do pay attention to the whole child. I had read and heard that they believe in not only working with kids to become honorable people, but the proof is in the pudding. Not only are these kids respectful, but the faculty has gone above and beyond for us. We are very, very happy with our decision to send her to Carmel. It's a nurturing environment, and she is really being challenged academically.

I was in the first class to graduate from Carmel High School in 1966. My experiences were nothing more then great during my 4 yrs at Carmel. The prients were all great teachers along with our lay teachers. Fr. Fenton and Fr Michael are always in my heart. Fr Fenton was a tuff guy but through his discipline I was prepared for my military life. I thank God for my opportunity to attend Carmel High.

I am one of five children in my family who went to school at Carmel. All my siblings and I went to Carmel and graduated to go to great college careers. In my four years there were definite challenges, but I couldn't be more thankful. I wouldn't want a light course load from a college prep school. My teachers were all willing and available to me at any time and the extra curricular activities were outstanding. From my four years, I never once witness cliques or defined slots that kids often put each other in. There was such an amazing sense of community that banded together to support one another in sports and arts. I cherish my years at Carmel and enjoy visiting when I can.

The information about physical abuse with paddles is completely untrue. I speak from experience as I was a member of the graduating class of 1986 and attended the school for 4 years. The years I spent at Carmel were formative years of my life. Not always an easy time, but the lessons continue to influence my life to this day. I highly recommend this school. I visited the school a couple of years ago, and I found the same sense of the community, support and welcome that I experienced from 1982 - 1986. Again, the reviews of abuse are bunk. The majority of staff went above the call of duty in supporting their students, and some of those teachers I am proud to still call friends.
