Story

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic chapel built into the buttes of Sedona, Arizona, run by the Diocese of Phoenix, as a part of St. John Vianney Parish in Sedona.HistoryThe chapel was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church. After an attempt to do so in Budapest, Hungary (with the help of Lloyd Wright, son of noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright) was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region.Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K. Strotz, both from the firm of Anshen & Allen. The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land; the late Senator Barry Goldwater assisted Staude in obtaining a special-use permit. The construction supervisor was Fred Courkos, who built the chapel in 18 months at a cost of US$300,000. The chapel was completed in 1956.

Wheelchair accessible! Small location, lots of people, nice views from one side of the chapel, city views from the other. Backdrop to the chapel are intense red rock formations. A sloped walkway curves up around the chapel from the preferred parking area. I personally prefer wilderness views, but the city-folk I was with weren't walkers, so this was a nice short visit and walk for them (about 100-200 ft). I recommend passing the first gates that say you are entering the chapels grounds, and then drive as far as you can up the drive (circles left) until you actually see the chapel. You will likely find better parking up there than just inside the gates.

Beautiful place but park at the top if you can. Go through the gates and keep going until you get close to top. The hill takes a toll if you have respiratory issues. The grade is about 35 to 40%. There IS a turn around at the top of the hill too, I would use, because the road is narrow and you would need to make three point turns and road is busy. No food or drink allowed in chapel. Nice gift shop below with kind, helpful staff. The views are stunning. Nice breeze....😊

A very nice place to visit. Parking is tight and limited. If the site is busy be prepared to hike from lower parking spots up a steep drive. The Chapel was built by the Catholic Diocese for use by all denominations and pays reverence to the area and its beauty. It is well worth the visit.

Beautiful chapel to visit in this spiritual land of Sedona. The chapel itself blends into the landscape while also standing out with it's beautiful design and captivating stain glass on the front of the structure. The chapel itself sits higher up so it has an amazing view over the valley. Best to get there early so that you beat the people and the heat, parking can be hard to get.

Very unique Church. Parking can be a pain but it's worth it. Parking at the bottom and walking up is very easy. Good way to get some great views of both the Church and surrounding scenery. The Church itself is tiny inside.
