The Charcoal Pit is popular with the high school crowd as well as retirees. They are known for their delicious ice cream dishes. Their milkshakes are the best. The menu is varied but I'd recommend their hamburgers/fries.id give a great recommendation for a quick bite with good music.

With Grub Burger just up the road this place is a hard sell for me. The food is barely average, with the burgers basically burnt to a crisp, and the atmosphere though very '50s, looks old and run down. I'd say the best thing here are the milkshakes. There are a number of flavors and they give you pretty large sizes. If you're going for the food though there's a McDonald's pretty much right across the street...

Been visiting this Charcoal Pit for decades. I grew up right down the street. My son and I ordered the Home Run Burgers and they were great. I live about thirty miles south so the Kirkwood Highway Pit is closer, but it's always nice to visit this one.

A Delaware institution. Have been going there for 40 years +. It is a museum piece, a little time machine back to the 50's, although the owners have "updated" the place a few times over the years, so that its not completely "time capsule " like, anymore. This is sad, because nostalgia was 90% of the experience, as the food is pretty lame. It would be nice to see this building lovingly restored to its original appearance, then maintained as an historic building.

The food is fairly good however the prices are outrageous for the type of food they offer. It's like diner food but proper sit-down restaraunt prices. For 2 sandwiches, fries and 2 milkshakes it was well over $40. And the wait times for takeout are out of control even when you call ahead. Was told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. Arrived and waited an additional 35 minutes bringing the total to close to an hour. No apology. Terrible management. I'm sure this used to be a fantastic spot, but those days seem to be long in the past, just like the atmosphere they are known for. Would not reccomend as there are far better options.
