St. Charles Mall was a one-story enclosed neighborhood mall located in St. Charles, Illinois, United States. Its two anchors were Kmart and the now-defunct Joseph Spiess Company.HistorySt. Charles Mall opened in 1979 on the west side of St Charles. It was a successful mall until crosstown Charlestowne Mall opened with four anchors and many stores. By 1995, the mall had lost the last of its tenants and was closed off. It was auctioned in 1996.RedevelopmentOriginally, the mall was to be demolished and an auto mall was to go up in its place. Only the core, however, was going to be demolished, and the former K-Mart and the former Spiess were to remain and be remodeled into auto dealer offices. Those plans were set and the mall site sat like that for over a year. However, in mid-2003, the auto mall plans were killed, and it was announced that the remainder of the mall was to be demolished and the land to be leased for individual retailers as part of a life-style center. Those plans were silent for a few years until it was announced in late 2007-early 2008 that a new development called St. Charles Town Centre was to be built there. Groundbreaking was to start in 2010, but the St. Charles City Council voted down the proposed development. As of 2010, the redevelopment plans are uncertain.External links Redevelopment Plans: St. Charles Town Centre
