Story

Charlotte Latin School is an independent, coeducational, non-sectarian, non-partisan, college-preparatory day school, founded in 1970, serving approximately 1,400 students in transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade and located in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. In 1977, Charlotte Latin was the youngest school in the nation to be granted a Cum Laude Society charter, and has been named three times as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. The school is jointly accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.HistoryIn 1969, a group of Charlotte parents decided to found a new school, modeled on New England's seventeenth century "Latin" schools. These parents wanted to make sure their children received a strong, traditional academic foundation, which they felt was being sacrificed by the public schools in favor of largely unproven teaching fads which included the 1969-1971 litigation which ultimately prompted a landmark US Supreme Court decision which resulted in court-enforced busing in 1971 to integrate the local public schools.

Absolute worst place to be. I reviewed the school a couple of months ago and surprisingly it is no longer there! This was the worst experience I think any child could imagine to have. Some of the teachers are genuine and caring, but for the most part they are extremely strict for no reason and it seems like they love talking behind everyone’s backs. The administration is awful and the kids are even worse. So much cheating happens at this school it’s unreal - and the school’s “honor code” is their core value: “Honor above all”. I did not have a single test experience where there was no cheating going on nearby, and usually it was so obvious I was shocked the teachers did not do anything about it. Absolutely horrible overpriced school with cliques and very little diversity. Racism everywhere and bullying to the point where at other schools kids would be kicked out immediately. I would strongly advise you not to send your child here. Hopefully this review does not magically disappear...

We have now had our Charlotte Chess Center program at Latin for 3 years. Freya Hamilton does a great job with enrichment activities.

Wow! I am sorry to hear this about your daughter's experience, but this does not sound like the Charlotte Latin that I know and love. When I think of Latin, I think of a school community that fosters a love of learning, encourages students to put others' interests above their own, and embraces the differences and diversity of its student body. My favorite part about Latin is how much the faculty and administration are individually invested in each student on campus. It is a powerful thing to witness a teacher personally connect with your child. Whether it's our Head of Lower School greeting every student by name during morning carpool, the chair of the math department offering extended office hours to help a struggling student, or a 3rd grade teacher coming to a students' Saturday basketball game, our teachers care about our students. They show it inside and outside of the classroom every single day. Of course I know our children will get a great education at Latin, but it's the community and the relationships that make this school so special.

I'm so sorry to hear about your family's experience Artie, and sadly I have to agree. I used to go to Latin and I had a similar, if not slightly less horrible experience. I was repeatedly bullied by a group of people to the point where I think it contributed to my mental problems and significantly diminished the quality of my school life. I was told to kill myself online, was called names in class, had my hair pulled in class, and the school and teachers did nothing about it even when they could see it happening. No one was ever punished or talked to, but I was dumped onto the guidance counsellor and asked to talk about my problems as if it were my fault that these people were making my life a living hell. The education is good, but the entitlement and complete disregard for others of the students here is unacceptable. I heard no end of sexist, racist comments from students and the only saving grace was the great science teacher I had in 6th grade. When they moved me to London and away from that school, it was the best thing my parents ever did for me.
