Chelsea School, now located in Hyattsville, Maryland, has been educating bright, creative students who learn differently since 1976.
Chelsea School was founded in 1976 by Betty Nehemias and Eleanor Worthy, two Washington, DC parents of children with dyslexia. It was the first high school to specifically serve the needs of teens with language-based learning differences in the DC Metro Area.
From the very beginning, Chelsea School's focus has been on providing a skill-based curriculum to students organized in small homogeneous groups based on reading level. The teaching methods that were established were individualized and multi-sensory and included intensive reading intervention based on the most current research and findings.
As the school’s reputation grew in the 70’s and 80’s, families throughout the Washington, DC area began to look to Chelsea School to help their children struggling with learning disabilities.
Throughout 2016, Chelsea School will be celebrating our four decades of inspiring talented young people to meet their learning challenges head on and achieve success in college and beyond.
Chelsea School’s mission: to educate promising students with language-based learning differences in a rigorous and individualized college-preparatory environment to become lifelong independent learners.
