About

Children’s Fairyland is America’s first storybook theme park. Ever since we opened in 1950, we’ve been a magical place for young children to create, imagine, play, and learn.

Story

Children’s Fairyland is America’s first storybook theme park, located on the shores of Lake Merritt in the heart of Oakland, CA. Since 1950, Fairyland has been the low-tech, high-touch outdoor playground for young children to CREATE, IMAGINE, PLAY, AND LEARN.

A nonprofit community organization, Fairyland offers children and families a safe, stimulating environment for play and imagination with fairy tales, fantasy sets, performing arts, animals, and unique children's programming focused on early childhood education and literacy. As part of our mission to encourage young children to discover the joys of reading, we welcome school children on field trips from all over the Bay Area and offer subsidized visits to neighbors in need.

A little bit of history:

With the support of Oakland's parks superintendent William Penn Mott, Jr., the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club and the citizens of Oakland raised $50,000 to build Children's Fairyland on the shores of Lake Merritt in 1950.

*Admission cost between 9 and 14 cents
*The storybook sets were created by local architect William Russell Everitt
*Arthur Navlet, designed the gardens -- some original plantings still thrive today
*Walt Disney visited and incorporated ideas from Fairyland in his "magic kingdom," which opened in Anaheim in 1955
*Walt Disney also hired Fairyland's first executive director, Dorothy Manes, and one of our puppeteers, Bob Mills
*In 1956, Burton Weber created a program for young children called Fairyland Personalities, which is now our Children's Theatre Program

But it takes more than goodwill to sustain a place like Fairyland, and by the early 1990s, our park needed help. In 1994, with help from the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, we applied for and received 501(c) (3) nonprofit status. Now we can apply for grants, receive bond funds, and solicit donations to further our mission to provide a safe, family-centered environment that stimulates young children’s imagination and creativity. It’s been our goal ever since we opened on September 2, 1950.

Best of all, Fairyland has been able to maintain its modest admission price, making it one of the Bay Area’s most affordable options for family entertainment. Through generous grants from local foundations and corporations, we waive the cost of admission for some 4,000 low-income children each year.

Very cute kids place. My 5 year old son loved this place so much! This place is a toddlers and young kids dream come true. All sorts of kid rides from a train, to mini Ferris wheel, to carousel that do not cost extra. Rides supervisors are very pleasant, smily and clearly very helpful. Plenty area in the shade for little ones. Overall, this place was clean, bathroom was clean, friendly staff, price for entrance and food was average (not overpriced at all!) You and your kinds come out feeling you had a lovely time !! Some details about "Children's Fairyland" -$10 admission (1-100yrs) -Yearly membership available -$5 for parking for 1 day -Lots of places for kids for climbing and sliding -$3.00 for Storybook key. If you purchase this, your little one to stick this key in a box and listen to a quick story which has your favorite childhood stories! Also you can take this key to home and use for future.

Needs a bit of an update but liked it overall. Not too pricey. Friendly staff. Toddler proof environment. Nice weekend shows. Seating for parents. Relaxed atmosphere. Cappuccino needs less milk and more espresso to it.

Fun for everyone!! Of course kids absolutely love it here and could spend all day wandering around looking at all the funny characters, going inside the adorable little houses and playing on all the rides. And for "grown-ups" there is an unmistakable sense of nostalgia and you can feel like a kid again too :)

Quaint. For$10, this is good entertainment for kids from 3-5 years. Simple recreation of classic children's stories. Throwback to more simpler times. Plan to spend around 2-3 hours.

Excellent amusement park for young children along Lake Merritt in central Oakland. Very old school, nostalgic. All of the traditional USA childhood nursery rhymes represented, from Mother Goose to Alice in Wonderland! Lusciously landscaped with mostly native plants, do environmentally friendly. Some bedding plants for sale. Convenient location. Affordable. Parking lot for a fee. Metered onstreet parking also convenient. Bike friendly, close to public transportation.
