About

"Transforming Young Lives"

Story

Chrysalis is a small therapeutic boarding school located in northwestern Montana, just 5 miles from the British Columbia border. The school sits on 65 acres, nestled between Carpenter Lake and the Koocanusa Reservoir. Our beautiful campus is home to adolescent girls ages 13 to 18. The typical stay is about 18, but is individualized for each resident’s needs with the expectation of program graduation. Students live “family-style” in one of three homes, hold each other accountable for actions, and become responsible for themselves. Our supportive home environment encourages girls to build on personal strengths, while they examine and challenge old patterns which have prevented growth.
Chrysalis provides a special blend of care and therapy, with a gentle firmness to help girls recover from a past of pain, sorrow, untenable family situations, personal mistakes and self-destructive behavior. Chrysalis enables students to develop healthy coping, living, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Personal responsibility and healthy risk-taking result in a positive sense of self and a strong identity. Self esteem surges ahead as girls experience mastery in many aspects of their lives including academics, physical fitness, self awareness, relationships, and self discipline. Opportunities for creative expression are provided through various workshops and classes. Each girl’s uniqueness enriches our community and contributes to the ever evolving tapestry of our lives together.

Our mission is to provide the best quality therapeutic services, education, and experiential opportunities to adolescents and their families in the context of a warm and nurturing residential boarding school environment while maintaining a commitment to integrity in all that we do.

I used to go to chrysalis, and it messed me up more than before. Every single person I know and was friends with from chrysalis, is doing more drugs, they are sadder and worse. I even have a worse relationship with my parents because of the way chrysalis treats girls. you are treated like there is something wrong with you, and when parents stand up for their kids they get screwed. every girl definitely does NOT get to go on an international trip. the owner of chrysalis is a creep, and many girls have nightmares about him. it never felt like a safe place, but a constant power struggle that is based completely on money and keeping your mouth shut when there are actual problems. I suggest treatment for people, because many things in therapy are very helpful, but this is not the "safe haven" place that it seems like. I didn't go in for depression, or doing any drugs but smoke weed, but I came out with bad depression, no relationship with my parents and doing 10 times more drugs. While in chrysalis, my best friend and I made a document of all of the times a staff would yell at us in a day and for what reason just to show how ridiculous the staff were.

If you are thinking about visiting this campus, don't hesitate! GO! I'm in the process of deciding on a therapeutic boarding school for my daughter. We haven't formally decided because school board funding is a determining factor. But Chrysalis is my favorite of the four schools I toured! I wanted to write this review mainly to encourage families to make the journey. I spoke with so many families who heard amazing things and really liked Chrysalis on paper and from their website/videos. But they didn't make the journey because of the distance. It's totally worth the trip! The staff is amazing! They are kind, caring, involved and really give you their absolute presence. I met several girls currently going through the program (most from big cities) and they are loving the adventure component, along with many other aspects! I love how intimate the program is. And their location in Montana is just magical! I'll write more after our daughter completes the program. I'm certain it will be another 5 star review! :-) Feel free to reach out if you need more info. I'd love to help! Oh, one more thing. If you are concerned about the adventure part, I met with other girls currently in programs around Salt Lake City. They all said they wish they could go out to the wilderness and hike more often. And most of these girls were coming out of wilderness programs! :-)

How can it be more amazing than having the opportunity to facilitate growth and change and healing in the lives of adolescent girls and their families? I have had the honor of walking along the side of girls as they mature, take healthy risks, explore other cultures and countries, adventure on wild rivers, climb mountains, provide service work to those less fortunate on other continents, discover their true potential, develop meaningful relationships and blossom. I have had the privilege of working with families in therapy to heal and change their dynamic. The warmth and nurturing provided by our team provides a safe place for our girls to courageously look inside. I love the magic of growing some of our own food on our beautiful campus and watching girls embrace the grounding and pleasure that is part of gardening. How wonderful it is when a student discovers that learning is powerful and an education will provide opportunities to make dreams become reality.

I love Chrysalis School. I've had the distinct opportunity and privilege to watch girls heal, grow, mature, and transform their young lives. It's difficult to imagine an environment more rich for development, whether social, academic, or emotional. Girls travel around the planet, doing amazing service projects, challenging themselves physically through serious adventures, and immersing themselves in exciting new cultures across it all. Weekends and summers in Montana are full of biking, hiking, climbing, riding, rafting, skiing, and other marvelous experiential activities. Academics are individualized and constructive, students discover their potential in the classroom, perhaps for the first time, and then begin to imagine a brighter future. Clinical work is nurturing, savvy, and focused. Students receive the "gentle firmness" they need to find their way toward a successful young adulthood. The campus is beautiful, Montana is the best, but the people at Chrysalis make it special, year in and year out. Thanks Chrysalis!
