Things change, we change, and we strive to find things that give us joy – and through sharing and creating, increase our joy. That is what is behind Cicada Pi.
Cicada Pi is a personal studio, a work space for classes and a retail space for objects: found and family; art and artifacts. It is a place for expression and community.
Owner and operator Veronica Fremont has been known as a jewelry maker, instructor and small business owner. For many years she owned Magpie Studios, where many students learned the fundamentals of metalsmithing and jewelry design and construction. More recently her creativity has been directed at non-wearable, sculptural art. After an absence of several years, Veronica is returning to the same location. “In some ways, I feel like a cicada emerging from underground after years of restorative silence.” she explains. “So with Cicada Pi, after a personal journey of renewal, I am returning to my art and my community.”
What makes Cicada Pi unique is not the combination of studio and shop, but the unusual things one will find there. “In the search for sculptural elements, and because I am somewhat acquisitive by nature, I have accumulated many unique items,” she explains. “Some have been or will be incorporated in my work or used as a source of inspiration.”
Upon entering the shop, visitors will find an eclectic collection of vintage furnishings, decorative objects, textiles, and other artful objects. Items in this extensive collection are available for sale, or can be rented by designers and photographers to use as props. Artists can choose from hundreds of found objects such as type, bone, chain, wire, optical lenses, beads, wood panels, and other idiosyncratic findings. Hand-wrought jewelry, sculpture and metalwork made by Veronica and other professional artists will also be showcased. In addition, paintings, sculpture and ceramics made by other artists will be for sale.
Behind the shop, in the Cicada Pi studio space, classes will be given that primarily emphasize metal work -- such as jewelry making, sculpture and other three-dimensional crafts. Some will be taught by Veronica herself, drawing on decades of teaching experience in art jewelry fabrication and sculpture; others by professional guest artists. The studio will include day and evening classes for adults, and after-school and Saturday classes and workshops for adults, high school and middle school students.
