My husband and I ate here for the first time, we have a loved one that highly recommended, and a good friend that couldn't say enough about it. The dining experience is posh and cozy, artsy and refined. The people working here are passionate and WARM, with an incredible knack for impeccable service! James was our waiter at the bar. They greet you warmly, check on you like family, and rock the floor like a GSix! The FOOD was special and played a symphony on the pallet with many popping flavors and multiple textures, perfecto on balance! Just when you thought there could be no more surprise, dessert comes out, the German chocolate cake is the BEST I've ever eaten and the homemade bourbon chocolate chip ice cream shut the front door! I have been a reviewer and artist for many years and I have never had a restaurant experience like this in Virginia! Thank you all for the most amazing experience we've had in a long time! The owner is also a chef working with his crew, that alone tells you what kind of experience you should expect! Vegetarian options: The charcuterie board came with a bacon item on it, however I told them I was a vegetarian and they swapped out for a vegetarian option. It was wonderful!
4.6 We decided on this place for our anniversary dinner and man were we pleased with our choice! We were given some champagne for our anniversary. We each got a glass of wine, I got moscato, my husband got Riesling, and we both got sparkling water. We got the octopus to share and that was so tender, and the hummus they lay it on makes it that much better! Highly recommend that! I got the Bison meatloaf and that was the best meatloaf I’ve ever had! I’m not a meatloaf person normally, I’m not sure why it sounded so good that night, but it was an awesome choice. My husband got the special for the night. They said seared shrimp and he was sold. It was pretty much shrimp and grits. He said it was amazing though. We left no room for dessert, so we’ll have to try that next time. The staff is really good about making sure no empty plates are left at your table. Our waitress was very nice, explained the menu really well and gave recommendations. The only downfall is the restaurant is really small inside. Not a lot of seating at all, and the tables are a little close together because of that. I didn’t feel comfortable enough sitting and staying for a while. And my husband is over 6 and a half feet tall, so I know he felt uncomfortable also. But we both loved the food, and definitely want to go back, just when it’s not crowded. But I do highly recommend to everyone!
My first time coming to 1918, I had VERY high expectations from all I’d heard…those expectations were blown away! The service - impeccable yet friendly and engaging, The food - stellar. Cannot recommend the lobster dumplings/shumai nor the orange and beet salad highly enough. The balance of flavors as good as beautiful presentation! The amuse bouche a great welcoming start : Atmosphere/vibe; warm, cozy and classy. Wonderful selection of high end bourbons and whiskeys. Can’t wait to come back again!
/Update/ Still my favorite date night spot. Very welcoming atmosphere, warm lighting, not too quiet. Everyone was simply having a good time there. Food was amazing as usual. Loved every dish. Honestly never disappointed and we have been here multiple times. If anything, they have limited seats available so it's best to make a reservation before you go! Must-try spot in Newport News! ___________________________________________ Lovely place to have a romantic dinner. Love the ambiance. Not too quiet, not too loud. Just a nice place to enjoy drinks and food and relax. Entire crew is beyond professional and kind. First time dining in. Beautiful place. Very welcoming, relaxing and clean, well ventilated. Servers were all very pleasant and professional. Above and beyond. Lovely place for date night. We were very happy with the food. Fresh ingredients and very well executed. Each bite was packed with textures and flavors. Will definitely be back again very soon!
Where do I begin… This has to be the best dinning experience I ever had. The restaurant was very quaint. Soon as you walk in you feel so welcome. The small bite we received was absolutely delightful. It was a salmon mouse that was packed with so much flavor. For appetizers we had the Asiago bread and the friend tempura lobster. Both items was scrumptious. For our main course we had the bison meatloaf with mashed potatoes and wilted spinach as well as the Waugh steak and vegetable. Both main course was divine. My husband and I both had cocktails that were delicious. The service was top notched!! James, Kipp and Lauren were simply amazing. They were beyond attentive and helpful. We will certainly return.
My husband and I moved to Newport News a year ago and we had yet to find a great place to indulge our taste buds until tonight. We had to frequently travel to Williamsburg or VB for culinary adventures, not realizing that this little french-inspired gem of Hampton Roads have been here all along. We actually found the place through Google and gave it go during one of my rare weekend night offs. We had to wait 30 mins to get sat even after making a reservation. But don't worry, this is a good story. The area is charming and I had good company my husband so I was a good sport about it. From the beginning though, we have felt warm hospitality and personalized service. Our hosts were gracious, honest and kind. The amuse bouche truly tickled our palates. There is complexity and balance in all the dishes that was brought to us except one. The wagyu beef. I come from Hawaii where we have fresh seafood at all times and an abundance of fine dining restaurants serving high quality wagyu, usually A5. I don't know if my standard for this particular dish was too high but it came out medium, contrary to the medium rare I ordered. The char was also too overpowering compared to the richness and subtlety that wagyu beef is known for. But they comped it for us along with our first round of drinks and appetizers. That was surprising to us and it was a testament of their great customer service. We'll be coming here again for sure. The customer service itself is worth the price. Great job Circa 1918.
I asked to speak to the manager and it turns out the manager Kip was our server!!! I comment on really great service and really poor service and Circa 1918 could not have a thing better! Their drinks were exceptional, the food superb, but the service was better than I have received in 5 star restaurants in New York or Miami. Excellent job and keep up the good work. I would love to see the ribeye with crab & buttter back on the menu. You made a good night great for us and I truly appreciate that!!!!!
I’d write a more extensive but the pile of 5 star reviews in here speaks for itself. Might be the best restaurant I’ve eaten at on the Peninsula, if not all of Hampton Roads, and at prices that put the Le Yaca’s and Schlesinger’s to shame. A MUST eat if you love well prepared fine dining. A note for the owner: might need to update the menu here in GMB…
My wife and I have tried many places around the Hampton roads area and I think this place has just become our favorite. The food was fantastic, the menu fits on one page but everything they serve is thoughtfully prepared and tastes amazing. You can tell that the people that run this place care about putting out quality plates. The mixed drink options are also very good and we found it to be an all around fun date night. My only gripe/advice is if you get seated next to the door on a cold night it can get a bit drafty when the door is opened. Due to the size of this place it’s understandable Parking: Street parking, on a busy night you may have to walk a bit but Hilton village is beautiful so it shouldn’t bother you to much
When I tell y’all that this place is a must to visit…I absolutely mean it. I’d call it a casual luxurious type of restaurant. It’s a tad on the pricey side, but I’d still go again. From beginning to end me and my sister were made to feel comfortable. The food was DELICIOUS and so were the cocktails. They had specials or you could order off the menu..100000/10 and I’ll be back.
