This city is a joke. I lived here for over 20 years and ended up leaving. All this city cares about is two things 1) trying to beat Aurora and want to be the second largest city in the state, even if that means buying out private property just so they can build more subdivisions, or building houses and apartments on any little piece of land they can get just to get more people in the city. It's even in their dumb logo "city in the suburb" 2) the riverboat casino, this city cares about the boat more than anything, that they don't even care how many people become addicted to gambling. A few years back my father had his wallet stolen, we called the credit card companies and found out it was being used at the casino. When we called the police they just told us "There is nothing they can do", I'm pretty sure the police station gets some of that money...SO Elgin, how did the city enjoy the money that was stolen from my father? Also I cannot see how this city claims to be crime free. I have lived in four different houses all in different parts of the city, and they were all in bad neighborhoods, I would constantly hear gunshot and gang activity. A bullet even went through the window in my house, again the police said there is nothing they can do, and tried to deny it was gang activity. The police told me "we do not have any gangs in Elgin". So what was it then? Also many of neighbors I had were rude, They get upset and call the police when my dog barks, and the police telling me I have to keep my dog under control, but yet when my neighbors play their music up so loud even at 1am in the morning, and have their kids run around all over the place unsupervised, the police don't do anything. I ended up leaving and moving to Chicago, it may sound weird but I feel safer in Chicago, a lot of the suburbs are getting worse with violence, at least in Chicago it's only the far west and south sides you have to worry about, with Elgin, It's like 90% of the city is unsafe.

HORRIBLE!!!! I moved out of state and decided to go thru the legal way of renting out my home instead of doing it the free, easy way that a lot of people do. so i paid the numerous fees for permits, inspections and landlord classes. THEY decided to make an arbitrary appointment for my inspection and snail mailed it but because i live out of town or the mail errors i never got their notice. instead of calling, texting, emailing me they sent a 50$ notice to me. When i called to discuss this matter they said its their prerogative to make appointments and they CAN waive the fee but they are choosing not to because they said i should have called weekly to see when they made my appointment! seriously?? what happened to customer satisfaction? What i love about Kohls and Trader Joes is they dont haggle over every dime and make it a great experience to return or if you have a concern. If i am paying almost 9000$ in property taxes a year,,i think i am a customer!!!! Move somewhere like West Dundee or Sleepy Hollow where they actually care about you as an individual.
