This structure, known as the Weld Building, was built in 1886 as two businesses. The south side was built by Weld and the north side by A. J. Center. At one time, there were three steps after you entered the building and a stairway dividing the two sides.
Primarily used as a hardware store, former tenants included: Fitzgerald’s Hardware, Vacin-Witt, Hopper Hardware, Gambles and True Value Hardware. The Keck family has been in this location since 1970 when Bill and Billie Jean Keck opened the Gambles store. Bill remodeled the store before opening, hiring Jim Carney, a local Colby contractor, to lower the main floor to street level and remodel the interior.
David and Terri Keck purchased True Value Hardware from Bill and Billie in 1994. In 2005, David started to make the transition from True Value Hardware to Colby Furniture and Home Store. Starting in 2012, David remodeled the upstairs of the building, removing over 5 tons of plaster from the walls and exposing the original Colby brick.
In January, the Keck family celebrated being in business at this location for 45 years.
