Story

The Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County is responsible for the acquisition, preservation, interpretation, and exhibition of artifacts and information reflecting the cultural heritage of Sutter County.

Permanent exhibits depict Sutter County history, including native Nisenan Maidu Indians, early settlers, and agricultural and transportation history. Also included are exhibits on the history of significant minorities in the county, including Chinese American, Japanese American, Punjabi, Mexican American, and Hmong.

The museum shows 3-5 temporary exhibits per year.

The Museum Store offers a selection of one-of-a-kind gifts, and a comprehensive selection of books on local and California history.

Very good for a local museum. They have a few good activities that make it entertaining to go to.

If you are interested in local history - Native Americans, agriculture, early settlers - then this is the place to visit. The exhibits are professionally presented and the staff will answer just about any question a person might have about the Yuba-Sutter area. They also bring in temporary exhibits from the Smithsonian and other museums in the U.S. and California. Your kids will love the Indian baskets and the scenes of daily life. They also have exhibits devoted to Americans of Punjabi, Chinese, Japanese, and Hmong descent. A sign stated that a permanent exhibit on Mexican-American culture in Sutter county would open soon. When I walked in a man behind the counter said "Welcome to your museum." I felt very welcomed.
