Story

Visit Orchard Street Shul on Shabbos morning and Jewish holidays at 9:30 and walk back in time, enjoying the world of spirited, traditional Jewish ritual in the original, period 1920's sanctuary purpose-built by Eastern European Jewish immigrants in New Haven's Old Jewish Neighborhood. In the Shul where our forebears once stood, you will experience the timeless ritual of the traditional Orthodox Ashkenazi service Jewish immigrants brought to America and feel a spiritual connection that transcends time and space -- followed by the warm fellowship of a traditional Kiddush. All are welcome and the synagogue is available for tours and life cycle events that fit its tradition. The synagogue is conveniently located in the middle of the Yale-New Haven Hospital campus, within easy walking distance of Downtown, Yale, Westville, and Beaver Hills communities.

Mission

Orchard Street Shul -- Congregation Beth Israel provides a traditional Jewish House of Worship, Study, and Meeting in a landmark synagogue located in New Haven's historic Jewish neighborhood of Oak Street/Legion Avenue. After many years of limited use, it is once again open every Shabbos and Jewish holiday under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Mendy Hecht, grandson of the late Rabbi Dr. Maurice I. Hecht Of Blessed Memory, who had served the shul for 45 years. Shabbos and holiday morning services regularly start at 9:30 AM.
