In 1988, Rabbi Sanford Akselrad became the new rabbinic leader of the congregation and brought with him a vision that foresaw a place of "living Torah." New programs and activities quickly followed to embrace this vision.
Over the years, paralleling the dramatic growth in the Las Vegas valley, the temple experienced a period of rapid growth. From a small congregation of 80 families in 1988, CNT now comprises a membership of over 650 families making it the largest Reform synagogue in Nevada. Despite the temple's size, the congregation has always maintained a warm sense of intimacy and member involvement.
CNT has committed itself to being a spiritually uplifting community that seeks always to be involved with service to others. In addition to its own programs and activities, CNT continually works with other local churches and organizations to do everything from helping homeless families get back on their feet to helping inform the community via political forums as well as speakers from Israel and around the U.S. who speak on national and international topics.
CNT has been active in starting new programs for the community, including Interfaith programs on Chanukah, Passover and the High Holydays; Jewish Alcoholics and Chemically Dependent Support Group; Taste of Judaism program introducing Judaism to people wanting to know more about the Jewish religion; Alzheimer Support Group; community-wide Yom Hashoah observance commemorating those who died in the Holocaust.
