A Little About the Shelter....

~Adopt a Pet~ The CPCAS Adoption Outreach seeks to place all adoptable animals in loving, lifetime homes. In fact, we fancy ourselves as matchmakers, actually. Our matchmaking skills are free and are included with the price of adoption.

The care and safekeeping of our area’s dogs, cats, bunnies and guinea pigs, ferrets and other domesticated animals is our first priority. CPCAS does not turn any Putnam County animal away.

Is your Pet Lost? We seek to reunite pet owners with their lost dogs or cats. Please stop by immediately after you realize your pet is lost! We can go over with you what we will need for a happy reunion! (The only way to be certain if your pet is at our shelter is to come see for yourself, in person!)

Remember that a collar and tag is your pet’s best way of being reunited with you quickly! If your pet gets out of every collar tried, you might consider micro-chipping!

CPCAS works with the Cookeville Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department’s Animal Control personnel in their efforts to enforce our animal control laws and investigate cruelty and neglect cases, and we house the animals they bring to us for safekeeping.

We will work with 501c3 (recognized) Rescue Groups who have applied to partner with our shelter. We will seek out Rescue Groups to add to our Partner List. This will increase the chances our animals have to be placed in another home.

Very clean and organized facility. They seem to take excellent care of the animals, and have many well-kept animals to choose from. They have index cards on each animals cage with a detailed description of its age, background, shot and altering history, and if they are good with other cats or dogs. I've got 2 cats from here and would like to get a 3rd!

First off I find it disgusting that people are saying not to adopt from here. Every animal needs a loving home no matter where it comes from. Second, the staff was incredible here! They were very helpful and kind and the adoption process was very simple and easy! I'm glad I came and found this little guy!

The volunteers are kind and sweet. Every time I have visited they have been nice and helpful. However, the staff and policies need to be reconsidered, along with the adjoining Animal Control. Do not bring an animal here that you want a happy ending for. Look to local rescues who will truly have the animal's best interest at heart. This shelter IS also a kill shelter, so don't be fooled by its new "bells and whistles". I hope the old shelter facility can be utilized one day as a no kill facility. Until then, support local rescues!

I recently adopted my dog, Apollo, from this shelter and I can't believe how horrible the conditions were-- particularly the dog area. When I first went in no one greeted me or even told me what to do or any safety precautions before going in to see them. Thankfully there was a sign posted saying to sanitize your hands in between each area. As soon as I went in I was heartbroken. Every one of the dogs were whimpering and hopping up wanting to be loved. They were kept in small concrete floor cells with poop and pee on the floors. The staff didn't care enough to keep their environment clean, let alone provide a suitable environment. Their cells were attached to an outside cell by a doggie door, and no heating was provided for them. Their area was relatively cold and if it weren't for the staff wanting heat I don't think they would bother. Almost every dog was emaciated and there was only dirty water provided. No bedding, no nothing. Most dogs also looked dirty and some even had injuries. They even kept some of their dogs outside in this cold winter weather. I didn't get to see them, but I can't imagine they were treated any better. The only real friendly staff I met was the lady at the front desk and one of the ladies who helped me adopt Apollo. The guy I spoke to to meet Apollo just asked me which one and when he went in to get him the dogs went mad. They were attacking each other, ramming into the cages, barking nonstop, etc. I couldn't help but cry, I was so overwhelmed by what they were going through. I almost couldn't choose, I wanted to save them all. One of the worst experiences I've had, and I am so thankful I was able to save Apollo. I am also very upset they are a kill shelter. Every animal deserves a chance. They are a blessing, not a burden... You can just see the sadness in his eyes compared to what it's like to have compassion and love. I hope they fix this, or get more funding. Otherwise they should find more rescue shelters.

I got my wonderful cat Olly here. We found out later he developed feline leukemia, and our vet offered to put him down. We had four more beautiful years after that day. After that, he wasn't able to clean himself and had to be put down because he was in pain. He had a quick, painless death at home. RIP Olly. Bless this shelter.
