Great place to get away, clean paths, lots of areas to explore, high probability of seeing the salt river wild horses & beautiful sunrises/ sunsets

We went to see "The Salt River Wild Horses" are the beloved and majestic horses roaming the lower Salt River in the Tonto National Forest, AZ. They are the pride of the community, a favorite subject of photographers and the icon of the wild, free spirit of  the American West. The water was a little low and created exposed areas with lush green grass coated in a white film which is salt/mineral deposits hence "Lower Salt River" I can see why they love this spot. We sat down in the dry riverbed and suddenly a group of horses with 2 young ones came out of the forest and began to graze on the grass surrounding us. A surreal moment as the sun was setting and one we will never forget.

We go here at least once a week. Take the r.v. and sit out front enjoying a b.b.q. and drinks. For those wanting to spend the day, they have tables and grills for those wanting to grill up a burger or steak. Bathrooms and areas are cleaned twice weekly.

The place is good for camping, but thee restroom is not good.

Gorgeous. Trees everywhere and camping in the tall grass. You can walk down to the shallow river to throw rocks or spearfish. The cliff itself is great for rappelling. All you need to do is get a $6 Tonto pass for parking. There are good bathrooms and lots of parking. The only downside is sometimes it's crowded.
